After Sony showed the Afeela prototype recently, the company has taken its most concrete step yet into the automotive market as the Afeela electric vehicle transitions from a long-running concept into a near-production model ready for showrooms.
At CES 2026, Sony and Honda, operating through their joint venture Sony Honda Mobility, unveiled the Afeela 1 in a pre-production form that closely reflects the final consumer vehicle. The company described the car as production-ready in design, signaling that the development phase is largely complete.
Design and hardware are now locked
The Afeela 1 retains the minimalist sedan design shown in earlier prototypes, with smooth body lines, slim LED lighting, and Sony’s distinctive front “Media Bar” display. This LED panel can show messages, alerts, and status information to people outside the car.
Sony Honda Mobility confirmed that the exterior design will not change significantly ahead of launch, marking the end of the concept-only phase.
Interior prioritizes software and digital experiences
Inside, the Afeela 1 focuses heavily on software-driven features. The dashboard uses a wide, screen-centric layout designed to support navigation, entertainment, and vehicle controls through a unified digital interface.
Sony positions the cabin as an extension of its broader entertainment ecosystem, blending mobility with interactive media rather than treating the vehicle as hardware alone.
Advanced sensors and assisted driving
Sony Honda Mobility confirmed that Afeela 1 includes 40 onboard sensors, made up of cameras, radar, LiDAR, and ultrasonic units. This hardware supports advanced driver-assistance systems rated at Level 2+ at launch, with additional capabilities planned through future over-the-air updates.
The company continues to frame autonomy as a software-evolving feature rather than a fixed launch capability.
Honda handles manufacturing and safety
Honda oversees the vehicle platform, safety engineering, and production. The Afeela 1 will be built at Honda’s Ohio manufacturing facilities for the U.S. market, ensuring compliance with American safety and quality standards.
This division of labor allows Sony to focus on AI, software, and entertainment while Honda manages traditional automotive execution.
Pricing, timing, and market rollout
Sony Honda Mobility confirmed that Afeela 1 deliveries will begin in California in 2026, followed by expansion to other U.S. states and Japan in 2027. Pricing starts at around $89,900, placing the vehicle firmly in the premium EV segment.
The Afeela 1 will compete directly with high-end electric sedans from Tesla and established luxury automakers.
Why it matters
Sony’s move from prototype showcases to a showroom-ready vehicle marks a turning point. The Afeela project now represents a real consumer product rather than a technology demo.
If Sony and Honda deliver on software updates, entertainment integration, and driving assistance over time, Afeela could redefine how technology companies approach modern electric vehicles.
