Microsoft is preparing to end feature updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10, putting another firm deadline in place for people who still use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Office apps on the older operating system.
Once Microsoft 365 version 2608 is released, Windows 10 devices will stop receiving new Microsoft 365 features and Copilot updates. Security updates will continue for supported subscribers until October 10, 2028.
Version 2608 is expected to arrive in August 2026, which means the change could take effect very soon for Windows 10 PCs.

The main change is that Windows 10 systems will effectively be frozen on Microsoft 365 version 2608 for feature development.
That means applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint should continue working, but new capabilities introduced in later Microsoft 365 releases will not be added to those Windows 10 installations.
The same applies to eligible Copilot features.
Security updates continue through October 2028
Microsoft is not ending Microsoft 365 security support on Windows 10 immediately.
Devices running Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 will continue receiving security updates until October 10, 2028, provided the customer has an active Office subscription.
That gives businesses and individuals more time to move away from Windows 10 without immediately losing security fixes for Office applications.
However, the distinction is important. Security maintenance will continue, but feature development will not.
After October 10, 2028, Microsoft plans to stop both feature and security updates for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10.
OneDrive gets similar extended support
OneDrive has a slightly different support arrangement.
The OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 22H2 will continue receiving updates through October 10, 2028.
Devices running older versions of Windows 10 will no longer receive OneDrive desktop app updates.
That makes Windows 10 22H2 the important baseline for anyone who plans to remain on the operating system during this extended support period.
Microsoft is pushing Windows 10 customers toward Windows 11
Microsoft recommends upgrading supported PCs to Windows 11.
The company warns that continuing to use Microsoft 365 Apps on an unsupported Windows 10 installation could create reliability and performance problems over time.
For people who cannot upgrade immediately, Microsoft 365 Apps will not suddenly stop functioning when version 2608 arrives. The more immediate effect is that the software will stop gaining new features while security fixes continue for roughly another two years.
The practical deadline therefore comes in two stages. Version 2608 marks the end of new Microsoft 365 features on Windows 10, while October 10, 2028 marks the planned end of security updates as well.
