Chrome Now Warns Users When AI Mode Shares Tab Content With Google

Google is adding clearer privacy messaging around how AI Mode works in Chrome. In recent Chrome Canary versions, the browser now shows a notice explaining that AI Mode shares the contents and URL of the current tab with Google.

AI Mode now tells users when tab data is shared with Google

The message reads:
Ask questions about this tab with AI Mode. When tabs are shared, their contents and URLs are sent to Google.”

The notice appears before users continue asking questions.

We observed the warning while browsing a web page in Chrome and using Google Lens. When users activate Lens from the toolbar or by right-clicking and selecting Search with Google Lens, Chrome allows them to capture an image, object, or region on the page.

After a selection is made, Chrome opens results in a side panel using the AI Mode interface. The current tab then becomes the active context, and users can continue asking questions related to the page or the selected content.

Chrome has tested tab-aware AI features before, but those experiences did not clearly explain how page data was handled. This notice directly tells users when AI Mode uses the current tab and what information is shared.

This behavior currently appears in Chrome Canary and may change before reaching stable versions. Google has not shared public details about availability in stable releases.
