The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2026) with an RTX 5080 is down to $3,299.99 at Amazon, and the refresh rate it advertises is not the one it starts in. ASUS says the 16-inch panel defaults to 240Hz, and reaches 300Hz only after the GPU mode is set to Ultimate in Armoury Crate.

The listing argues with itself on exactly this point. Its product title describes a 2.5K 240Hz/3ms screen, while the feature bullets below promise an ultra-fast 300Hz display.
Amazon has the laptop at $3,299.99 against a $3,899.99 list price, a 15% cut. It is sold and shipped by Amazon.com and listed In Stock at the time of writing.
The configuration under that screen is an Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 290HX Plus, an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB of GDDR7, 32GB of DDR5-5600 and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. At this price, a settings menu decides whether the panel delivers the number in the marketing.
What the 300Hz Nebula panel actually does
ASUS lists the display as 2.5K 2560 x 1600 at 16:10, IPS-level, anti-glare, 3ms, 100% DCI-P3 and Pantone Validated.
A footnote on the same ASUS spec page sets the terms. The default is 240Hz in Standard, Eco and Optimized GPU modes, and 300Hz requires opening Armoury Crate and choosing Ultimate.
Ultimate is the mode that routes the display through the discrete GPU. Amazon's bullets credit the MUX switch with a 5 to 10 percent gaming gain, and credit Advanced Optimus, the automatic mode Ultimate overrides, with improving battery life.
ASUS does not publish a brightness figure for this panel on its US spec page. Dolby Vision HDR appears in the Amazon bullets rather than in the ASUS display row.

What the RTX 5080 version adds over the RTX 5070 one
ASUS sells the same chassis as the G615LP-MB96 with an RTX 5070. The differences are larger than the GPU badge suggests.
This model gets two Thunderbolt 5 ports rated up to 120Gbps, 2.5G LAN, per-key RGB lighting and a 380W adapter. The RTX 5070 version gets one Thunderbolt 4 port, gigabit RJ45, 4-zone RGB and a 280W brick.
The GPU runs at ROG Boost 1550MHz and 175W, which ASUS breaks out as 150W plus 25W Dynamic Boost. NVIDIA rates the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU at 80W to 150W of subsystem power, so this is a full-power implementation.
Both models use the same processor. Intel launched the Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus on March 17, 2026, and claims up to 8% faster gaming and up to 7% faster single-thread performance than the Core Ultra 9 285HX.
Cooling is an end-to-end vapor chamber with tri-fan airflow and Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the chipset, the material one owner swapped for a graphene sheet to gain 35% performance. A latch on the base opens the machine for the memory slots and the empty M.2 bay.
One check does not resolve cleanly. ASUS is not selling this configuration yet, and its US store marks G615LW-AB96 as Coming Soon with no price. That leaves no maker price to undercut, and no published ASUS MSRP behind the $3,899.99 anchor.
How the other discounted laptops compare
| Laptop | Price | GPU and CPU | Display | Sold by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2026) | $3,299.99, was $3,899.99 | RTX 5080, Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus | 16-inch 2.5K 300Hz | Amazon.com |
| Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16-inch | $4,149.00, was $4,549.00 | RTX 5070 Ti, Core Ultra 9 275HX | 16-inch WQXGA 240Hz | Snow Bell |
| ASUS ROG Strix G18 (2025) | $2,369.99, was $2,799.99 | RTX 5070, Core i9-14900HX | 18-inch FHD+ 144Hz | Amazon.com |
The Lenovo Legion Pro 5 at $4,149.00 costs $849.01 more for a slower GPU, 64GB of RAM and 4TB of storage. Its own first bullet says the seal is opened for upgrade, and the seller is Snow Bell rather than Amazon.
The ASUS ROG Strix G18 at $2,369.99 saves $930 but drops to an RTX 5070, a 2024 Core i9-14900HX and an 18-inch 1920 x 1200 panel at 144Hz. Cheaper Strix G16 builds exist too, including the Ryzen 9 and RTX 5070 version at $1,649.
What the listing leaves out
Neither Amazon nor ASUS publishes the panel supplier, a brightness rating or a contrast figure for this display. Intel's own specification page for the 290HX Plus gives those core, thread, clock and cache figures, and rates the chip at 55W base and 160W maximum turbo power.
No end date is attached to the 15% cut, and ASUS could start selling the same model at its own price at any point. Prices on hardware like this move quickly, as the wider run of RTX 50 series laptop discounts this month showed.
