Not long ago we found ourselves in need of a new webcam for one of our computers. We didn’t want to spend too much money, yet we wanted to buy a webcam with decent specs and reasonably good video quality. We ended up on choosing a Logitech HD Webcam C270. We’ve used it for some time, and after learning all its ups and downs, we thought it would be good idea to share with you what we’ve found, in this review.
Unboxing The Logitech HD Webcam C270
Like most of Logitech’s products, the Logitech HD Webcam C270 comes in a rather large box. You don’t have to open the package in order to see the webcam inside.
Inside the box you’ll find the webcam, its warranty card and a quick install guide.
You can find the detailed list of specifications and hardware requirements on this Logitech webpage: Logitech HD Webcam C270 Specifications.
In our opinion, these are its most significant features:
- In-call HD video quality, at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.
- HD video recording, at resolutions of up to 720p.
- Photos can be taken at a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, in a 4:3 format.
- Pan, tilt and zoom controls.
- Face tracking.
- Motion detection.
The last three features are available only if you install the Logitech Webcam Software.
Installing The Logitech HD Webcam C270
When we connected the Logitech HD Webcam C270 to a Windows 8.1 computer, it was immediately recognized. The operating system automatically started to download and install its appropriate drivers. When the process was done, we checked to see if any additional software was installed. Beside its drivers, the webcam only adds a modern app called Logitech Camera Controller. This is a very simple app that only offers a few links to some Logitech web pages where you can do things like register your device, access support options or provide feedback.
You can simply start using the Camera app in order to operate and control your webcam. The webcam will function very well without any further configurations.
However, if you would like to have more control on its settings, we recommend that you download the Logitech Webcam Software. It will allow you to do things like capture photos and videos, share them to Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, change advanced camera settings, use face tracking or activate motion detection.
If you’re using Windows 7, the operating system identifies the Logitech HD Webcam C270 as a USB Composite Device. While the camera will work well in any video app, in this case we strongly recommend that you download and install the Logitech Webcam Software. Besides all the features we mentioned earlier, this software will also make sure that your camera is using the best and most up-to-date drivers.
Using The Logitech HD Webcam C270
As we briefly mentioned earlier, the Logitech HD Webcam C270 simply works out of the box. The picture quality is more than decent, the colors look natural and the contrast is OK. These statements are all true even in darker environments.
The webcam’s embedded microphone works very well and manages to pick up sounds even from long distances. We tested it using Skype and people on the other end of the line were able to hear us well even when we were more than 15 feet away from the webcam.
If you want to take advantage of all the webcam’s features and/or gain access to the more advanced settings it has to offer, you must install the Logitech Webcam Software. The software lets you capture images or record videos, manage and share these media files, schedule recording tasks, adjust image settings like exposure, brightness, contrast or colors, and so on.
One of the features we found interesting is the software’s ability to automatically record videos when motion is detected. With just a few clicks, you can transform your computer into a surveillance device.
The only thing where the webcam, or better said the Logitech Webcam Software, falls short is the lack of video effects or image frames. While these are not things we’d miss, some users might appreciate them.
In the picture above, we took a photo of the Logitech HD Webcam C270 mounted on a 24 inch monitor. As you can see, it’s a small camera that won’t be obtrusive no matter how and where you place it.
However, we didn’t like the fact that this camera can only be rotated on a vertical axis. If you want to rotate it horizontally, you’re out of luck, as its mounting system doesn’t allow this kind of movement.
Also, the mounting system has another flaw: the camera is pretty unstable and can fall easily if you’re using it on a laptop. On the other hand, if you intend to use it on a desktop PC, in which case the webcam doesn’t have to endure much movement, you won’t have any kind of problems.
The Logitech HD Webcam C270 isn’t a high-end device. However, it’s an HD camera with a very affordable price tag that delivers everything you would expect from it. You buy, it, you plug it in, and it simply works. Furthermore, the video quality is decent and the microphone is really good even when you’re far away from the camera. The only thing we would hold against it is its poor mounting system. If you’re not too pretentious, if you need a webcam that works out-of-the-box and if you don’t want to spend too much money, then the Logitech HD Webcam C270 is a good buy for you.
