Grand Theft Auto VI really will reach PS5 owners in New Zealand first. The New Zealand PlayStation Store listing opens the game at midnight on Thursday, November 19 in Auckland, which is 6 AM Eastern on Wednesday, November 18, and 18 hours before the US store.

That gap is the whole appeal of a shortcut that has spread across social media since the weekend: buy the game on a New Zealand account and play it on your own profile. The clock half checks out. The account half runs straight into Sony's rules, which tie every PlayStation account to the country its owner lives in.
How GTA 6 unlocks on PS5 region by region
GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at $79.99. Rockstar's store confirms that pre-loading opens on Thursday, November 12, for digital pre-orders and for boxed copies, which hold a download code instead of a disc.
Rockstar's own announcement gives dates rather than an unlock hour, so the PlayStation Store is where the timing lives. Across 12 storefronts, from Auckland and Tokyo to Berlin, London, São Paulo and Mexico City, the game opens at 12:00 AM local time on November 19. It is a rolling release, not a single global switch.
The US listing carries one time for the whole country: midnight Eastern, which is 9 PM Wednesday in Los Angeles. Canada uses the same moment. Rockstar has not said whether West Coast consoles follow that time or wait for midnight Pacific.
How much earlier GTA 6 unlocks in New Zealand than the US
The timing is about as lopsided as it can be. New Zealand moved to daylight saving time on September 27, and the US left it on November 1, so Auckland now sits 18 hours ahead of New York.
That puts the New Zealand unlock at 6 AM Wednesday on the East Coast, 3 AM on the West Coast, 11 AM in London and noon in Berlin. Measured against each home store, the head start is 18 hours in the US, 13 in the UK and 12 in Germany. Australia opens two hours after New Zealand, Japan four.
The so-called New Zealand trick is an old Xbox habit, revived as recently as the Forza Horizon 6 launch in May. On PS5 it needs more than a settings change, because the store you buy from is fixed by your account.
What Sony's PSN rules say about a New Zealand account
The shortcut rests on three things: a New Zealand account, New Zealand money in that account's wallet, and PS5 console sharing to carry the game over to your main profile. Only the last is an ordinary PS5 feature.
Sony's terms of service require you to pick "the country or region of your residence" when you create an account, and all account details must be accurate. An account created with false information can be suspended, terminated or restricted, and its country can never be changed later.
The money hits the same wall. A PlayStation wallet only accepts prepaid cards from the account's own country, and Sony can check a card's country against the account. Even the game licence is granted for use "in the country in which your Account is registered".
Boxed copies offer no way around it. Sony's support page says voucher codes only activate on an account from the matching country, and GTA 6 download codes on PS5 are region locked.
What a second PSN account means for your PS5 and wallet
Console sharing itself works as described. Once it is switched on, anyone using that PS5 can play the account's games, on one PS5 at a time. PlayStation Plus only partly travels with it: online multiplayer can be shared, but online storage and automatic patch downloads stay with the subscriber.
The cost sits elsewhere. A New Zealand copy is a second purchase, at NZ$139.95 for the Standard Edition or NZ$174.95 for Ultimate, on top of any pre-order you already hold. Wallet funds cannot be transferred, so New Zealand dollars stay on that account.
The bigger exposure is in the enforcement clause. Sony's terms allow it to restrict, suspend or terminate "your Account and PlayStation Device" over a violation, and a terminated account loses its trophies and subscriptions, with no refund for purchases or unused wallet funds. The terms call termination irreversible.
What PS5 players can do before GTA 6 arrives on November 19
For most players, the real head start is the pre-load. It opens on Thursday, November 12, a full week out, so the game can be installed and waiting when your own store unlocks it.
New Zealand players will be in Leonida before most of the East Coast is awake on Wednesday. Waiting the extra 18 hours costs nothing. The shortcut costs a second copy of the game and puts an account, and possibly the console, inside Sony's enforcement clause.
