South of Midnight creative director David Sears has questioned Microsoft's earlier approach to funding Xbox exclusives, admitting that he probably would not have approved his own game if he had been responsible for the company's investment decisions.
The comments came during a recent interview in which Sears discussed the creative freedom offered to Xbox studios and the financial challenges associated with maintaining that strategy.
Although he appreciated Microsoft's support during development, Sears believes the company's spending model was difficult to sustain over the long term.
His remarks arrive as Xbox continues to face questions about game development costs, studio investments and the future of exclusive titles.
South of Midnight Director Questions Xbox's Funding Decisions
During the interview, Sears explained that he had concerns about Microsoft's generous funding approach even while benefiting from it.
He believed that allowing studios substantial creative freedom without sufficiently controlling spending could eventually lead to difficult financial decisions.
When asked whether he would have approved funding for South of Midnight if he had been running Xbox, Sears responded, "Yeah, probably," indicating that he likely would have rejected the project.
However, he acknowledged that he personally wanted the game to be developed and was grateful that Microsoft supported it.
Sears also suggested that the company could not continue providing the same level of financial support indefinitely.
Reflecting on the situation, he described the previous strategy as "unsustainable" and said its eventual consequences were likely to be disruptive.
Microsoft Gave Compulsion Games Significant Creative Freedom
Despite questioning the financial model, Sears praised Microsoft's involvement in South of Midnight.
He said the company encouraged the development team and supported its creative decisions throughout production.

That freedom allowed Compulsion Games to pursue its artistic direction without the restrictions that might have accompanied a more conservative investment strategy.
However, modern game development frequently requires larger teams, longer production schedules and substantial financial commitments.
These factors can make it challenging for publishers to support experimental projects while maintaining profitability.
Sears' comments also follow similar discussions involving Double Fine, another Xbox studio known for producing distinctive games.
The broader discussion raises questions about how Microsoft might balance creative independence with tighter financial oversight.
For Xbox, the challenge is deciding which projects deserve investment while preserving opportunities for smaller and less conventional games.
Sears did not suggest that South of Midnight should never have existed. Instead, his remarks reflected concerns about whether Microsoft's previous funding approach could continue without significant changes.
