LEGO has unveiled a major new platform called Smart Play, introducing electronic Smart Bricks that bring light, sound, and responsive interactions to traditional LEGO builds. The company revealed the system at CES 2026, positioning it as one of its most significant hardware updates in decades.
What LEGO announced
At the center of Smart Play sits the Smart Brick, an electronic brick roughly the size of a standard 2×4 LEGO piece. It includes built-in LEDs, a speaker, motion sensing, and light detection, all powered by a custom internal chip. The brick reacts instantly to how a model moves or which components builders attach nearby.
LEGO designed the system to work without screens, apps, or phones. All interactions happen physically, keeping play focused on hands-on building rather than companion software.
How Smart Play works
Smart Play combines three physical elements:
- Smart Bricks, which generate light and sound effects
- Smart Tags, small elements that provide contextual cues
- Smart Minifigures, which trigger character-specific reactions
When builders tilt, move, or reconfigure a model, the Smart Brick responds in real time. For example, a starfighter can produce engine sounds when lifted or combat effects when positioned near tagged accessories.
First Smart Brick sets
LEGO confirmed that Smart Play will debut in Star Wars-themed sets. The initial lineup includes multiple vehicle and scene builds designed around iconic moments, with sound and lighting effects tied directly to play actions.
Preorders open January 9, 2026, with a full retail launch scheduled for March 1, 2026. LEGO plans to expand Smart Play beyond Star Wars if the first wave performs well.
Why this matters
LEGO describes Smart Play as its biggest shift toward interactive physical play since the introduction of the minifigure. Unlike past digital experiments, the company emphasizes backward compatibility, allowing Smart Bricks to integrate into existing LEGO systems.
Early reactions praise the tech for avoiding apps while raising concerns about higher set prices and long-term collectability. Even so, Smart Bricks signal a clear direction for LEGO’s future, blending classic construction with embedded electronics in a way that stays true to physical play.
What’s next
LEGO has not announced additional themes yet, but executives hinted that Smart Play could expand to other franchises and original lines if demand proves strong. More details on pricing and future sets are expected closer to launch.
