Xiaomi has unveiled the Xiaomi 17 Ultra in China, putting cameras and raw performance at the center of its flagship strategy. The phone pairs Leica-tuned optics with a new 200MP periscope zoom system and Qualcomm’s latest top-end Snapdragon chip.
Camera-first flagship with Leica partnership
Xiaomi builds the 17 Ultra around a Leica-tuned camera setup that targets creators and photography fans. The phone uses a 1-inch main sensor and a 200MP periscope telephoto that supports continuous optical zoom.
Xiaomi also sells a special Leica Edition with a mechanical zoom ring around the camera module. The ring gives you tactile control for zoom and shooting adjustments, which you rarely see on modern smartphones.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 powers performance
Xiaomi runs the 17 Ultra on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, aiming for top-tier speed and efficiency. Xiaomi pairs that platform with configurations that reach up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
The phone ships with Xiaomi HyperOS 3 based on Android 16. Xiaomi also highlights expanded device-mirroring features and deeper ecosystem integration.
Large OLED display and refined design
The 17 Ultra features a 6.9-inch LTPO OLED display with 2K resolution and an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. Xiaomi markets higher brightness for outdoor use and a slimmer overall body compared to past Ultra models.
Xiaomi also includes high-level water and dust protection ratings. The design keeps the camera bump prominent to support the upgraded imaging hardware.
Big battery with fast charging
Xiaomi equips the phone with a 6,800mAh battery to support long sessions of shooting, editing, and gaming. The 17 Ultra supports 90W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.
Pricing and availability
Xiaomi starts the 17 Ultra at around CNY 6,999 in China, with higher tiers and the Leica Edition carrying a premium. Xiaomi plans to begin sales in China on December 27, while it has not confirmed global launch timing.
Why it matters
After great releases like Xiaomi 12 and the subsequent models after, Xiaomi pushes the camera-phone category forward with a 200MP continuous optical zoom system and a physical control ring on select models. If Xiaomi brings the 17 Ultra outside China at competitive pricing, it will pressure other flagship makers to respond in 2026.
