How to Customize your Ringtone Quickly

Use this step-by-step guide to change your default ringtone, add a custom sound, and set unique tones for specific contacts on iPhone and Android.

Before you begin

Have the audio file ready (MP3/WAV for Android; M4R for iPhone). Keep it short (20–30 seconds) and free of DRM. If your phone has dual SIM, you can set different ringtones per SIM.

Note: On iPhone, truly custom ringtones must be in M4R format and added via GarageBand on iOS or by transferring an M4R file from a computer.

Change the default ringtone (iPhone)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Tap Ringtone.
  4. Choose a built-in tone under Ringtones.
  5. (Optional) Tap Vibration at the top to pick or create a custom vibration.

Pro tip: Use Text Tone in the same menu to change the sound for messages.

Add a custom ringtone on iPhone (GarageBand on iOS)

  1. Install/open GarageBand on your iPhone.
  2. Create a new project and import the audio you want to use. Trim to ~30 seconds.
  3. Tap the down arrow > My Songs to save the project.
  4. Long-press the project > Share > Ringtone.
  5. Name it > Export > Use sound as… to set it now or OK to set later in Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone.

Note: If your file is on a computer, you can still use GarageBand on iOS—import from Files or iCloud Drive and follow the same steps.

Add a custom ringtone on iPhone (Finder/iTunes transfer)

On Mac (Finder):

  1. Convert your audio to .m4r.
  2. Connect iPhone via USB. In Finder, select your iPhone.
  3. Drag the .m4r file onto the device’s window. It appears under ringtones.
  4. On iPhone, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and select it.

On Windows (iTunes):

  1. Convert the audio to .m4r.
  2. Connect iPhone and open iTunes.
  3. Drag the .m4r into Tones (or onto your device) and sync.
  4. On iPhone, pick it in Ringtone.

Troubleshooting: If you don’t see Tones, enable the sidebar and check you’re dragging the file to the device area. Make sure the file extension is .m4r (not .m4a).

Change the default ringtone (Android – Pixel/stock)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration.
  3. Tap Phone ringtone.
  4. Pick a tone, or tap My Sounds > + to add your audio.
  5. Confirm to set the ringtone.

Note: Exact names can vary by device. If you see Add ringtone or a file picker, choose your audio and save.

Change the default ringtone (Android – Samsung)

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
  3. If dual SIM, choose the SIM.
  4. Select a ringtone, or tap + (top right) to add your own file.
  5. Save your choice.

Pro tip: Use Notification sound here to change your default alert tone.

Set a unique ringtone for a contact

iPhone:

  1. Open Phone or Contacts, choose a contact.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Ringtone (and Text Tone if desired).
  4. Pick a tone > Done.

Android (general):

  1. Open Contacts/Phone, select a contact.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Look for Ringtone (you may need More/Advanced).
  4. Choose a tone > Save.

Samsung: In Contacts > contact > Edit > View more > Ringtone.

Change vibration patterns

iPhone: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone > Vibration > pick or Create New Vibration.
Android: Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics (names vary) > choose a pattern.

Tip: Turning haptics off will silence vibration for calls. Check Do Not Disturb/Focus if calls aren’t ringing.

Make a text tone or app tone different

iPhone: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone (and per-app in each app’s Notifications settings if supported).
Android: Settings > Notifications > select app > Sound to assign a different alert.

File prep and format basics

  • Length: 20–30 seconds is ideal.
  • iPhone format: M4R (AAC). Rename .m4a to .m4r after trimming/converting.
  • Android format: MP3/WAV/M4A typically work.
  • Location (Android): If needed, place files in Ringtones or Notifications folders so they show up system-wide.

Note: DRM-protected songs (e.g., certain streaming downloads) can’t be used as ringtones.

If your ringtone won’t appear or play

  • Restart your phone after copying new files.
  • Re-encode/trim the audio to ~30 seconds and try again.
  • Storage/permissions: Ensure the Files/Music app can access device storage.
  • iPhone only: Confirm the file is .m4r and was transferred to the device, not just the library.
  • DND/Focus: Turn off Do Not Disturb or set Allow Calls From your contacts group.
  • Volume: Check Ringer volume and hardware mute switch (iPhone).

About 30 seconds. Longer files may be truncated or rejected.

No. Alarms use separate sounds you can change in the Clock app.
