Windows 11 August Update Expands Low Latency Profile to Make Apps Launch Faster

Microsoft is expanding Windows 11’s Low Latency Profile with the August 2026 update, allowing the feature to speed up normal app launches in addition to Start menu, Search and other Windows interface elements.

The feature works by briefly pushing the CPU to its maximum clock speed when an application starts. After the launch process is complete, the processor returns to its normal operating speed.

The change should be most noticeable on older or lower performance PCs, where launching applications can take longer. Faster systems may show little visible difference.

Low Latency Profile is designed to make short interactions feel more responsive rather than permanently increasing processor performance.

When you launch an application, Windows temporarily increases CPU frequency so the initial workload can finish more quickly. Once the task is complete, clock speeds fall back to normal.

This approach avoids keeping the processor at maximum speed continuously.

App launches are now included

Microsoft began broadly rolling out Low Latency Profile earlier in 2026, but its initial implementation focused on Windows Shell components.

That included areas such as the Start menu, Windows Search, Notification Center and similar interface elements.

The August update extends the same behavior to regular applications.

In practice, the improvement may only save a small amount of time with each launch, but repeated throughout the day it can make a slower PC feel more responsive.

The difference should depend heavily on hardware.

Systems with slower processors are more likely to benefit because app startup is more frequently limited by CPU performance.

On a modern high performance desktop or laptop, apps may already open quickly enough that the change is difficult to notice.

The feature may not appear immediately

Installing the August Windows 11 update does not necessarily mean Low Latency Profile will become active immediately.

Microsoft is using a gradual rollout, so the feature may reach different PCs at different times.

Windows also does not currently provide a clear setting or indicator that tells you whether Low Latency Profile is enabled.

That makes verifying the feature slightly more complicated.

HWiNFO can help check whether it is active

One way to test Low Latency Profile is to monitor CPU clock speeds using a hardware monitoring utility such as HWiNFO.

After launching the program in Full mode, you can keep the sensor window visible and then open an application.

If Low Latency Profile is working, the CPU clock should rapidly increase toward its maximum frequency when the app starts.

It should then return to a lower frequency within roughly three seconds.

If the processor shows only a small frequency change, the feature may not yet have been enabled on your system.

Windows Task Manager is less useful for this test because its CPU monitoring does not update quickly enough to reliably capture such short frequency spikes.

Gradual rollout means some PCs will need to wait

Because Microsoft is enabling Low Latency Profile in stages, two PCs running the same Windows update may behave differently.

A machine that does not show the feature today may receive it later without another major Windows update.

Advanced users can use tools that expose hidden Windows feature flags, although waiting for the official rollout is the safer option for most people.

There is also little reason to force enable the feature if your PC already feels responsive.

Older hardware should benefit most

The expanded Low Latency Profile fits with Microsoft’s broader effort to improve Windows 11 responsiveness on lower specification computers.

Short CPU boosts cannot compensate for every hardware limitation, but they can reduce delays caused by brief processing workloads such as opening an application or displaying part of the Windows interface.

That can matter more on PCs using older processors, lower clock speeds or limited system resources.

For newer hardware, the change is more likely to be subtle.

The August 2026 update therefore does not fundamentally change Windows performance, but it gives the operating system another way to make everyday interactions feel quicker without keeping the CPU at maximum speed all the time.
