Gmail can technically support full end to end encrypted email, but the feature is not designed for ordinary personal accounts. If you want stronger privacy without moving to an expensive enterprise plan, services such as Proton Mail and Tuta offer simpler options.
Google’s consumer Gmail accounts encrypt messages while they are being transmitted when the receiving service supports it, and messages are also encrypted while stored. That is different from true end to end encryption because the email providers can still access message contents.
With end to end encryption, the message is encrypted so that only the sender and intended recipient can read its contents.

Gmail’s Confidential Mode does not solve this problem. The feature can limit how recipients access a message, but it does not change the underlying encryption model.
Google does provide true end to end encryption through Gmail, but it requires the company’s most expensive Workspace tier and is intended to be configured by enterprise IT departments rather than individual consumers.
Proton Mail offers a Gmail like experience
Proton Mail is one of the simpler alternatives if you want end to end encrypted email without managing encryption manually.
The service is based in Switzerland and works on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS and the web. Its free plan includes 1GB of mail storage, while paid subscriptions start at $48 per year according to the supplied article.
Messages exchanged between Proton Mail accounts receive end to end encryption automatically.
For people using another provider, Proton supports PGP key exchange. It can also send password protected messages that recipients open through a Proton hosted page.
Proton can also connect to an existing Gmail account and import existing mail while continuing to receive new messages sent to that Gmail address.
That makes it possible to begin using Proton without immediately abandoning an established Gmail address.
The main encryption limitation is that email subject lines remain unencrypted for compatibility reasons.
Proton also makes clear that encryption does not make an account completely anonymous. Swiss authorities can still require the company to provide some identifying account information under applicable legal processes.
Tuta takes a simpler approach
Tuta is another end to end encrypted service aimed at personal customers.
It is based in Germany and supports Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, iOS and web browsers. The free plan includes 1GB of storage, while paid subscriptions begin at €36 per year, or roughly $41 according to the article.
End to end encryption applies automatically when Tuta customers communicate with one another. The protection also extends to the mailbox, calendar and address book.
Email addresses themselves are not encrypted.

When sending mail to someone outside Tuta, you can protect the message with a password. One password can be reused for all encrypted communication with the same external contact, which can make the process easier for recipients.
Without that protection, messages sent to other email providers fall back to the normal model where encryption depends on technologies such as TLS during transit and whatever storage encryption the receiving provider uses.
End to end encryption still has limits
Encrypted email does not make every part of communication private.
Different providers may leave metadata such as subject lines, sender addresses or recipient addresses outside the encrypted content.
Protection can also weaken when you send messages to someone whose provider does not support compatible end to end encryption.
Encryption also cannot prevent a recipient from taking a screenshot, photographing a message or copying its contents after opening it.
The main benefit is reducing how many third parties can read stored email or expose its contents if systems are compromised.
For personal use, Gmail’s end to end encryption remains difficult to access because it is tied to enterprise Workspace deployments. Proton Mail and Tuta provide more practical alternatives, with automatic encryption between customers and free plans that let you test the services before paying.
