Are you using Mozilla Firefox and you want to change the default search engine from Google to Bing, DuckDuckGo or something else? Here are three methods for changing it so that, each time you search for something in the address bar, another search engine responds to your query instead of Google:
NOTE: This guide was created using Mozilla Firefox version 57, also known as Firefox Quantum. If Mozilla Firefox updates dramatically and this guide no longer works for you, do not hesitate to leave a comment and we will update it as soon as possible. Thank you!
1. Change the default search engine in Mozilla Firefox to Bing, Yahoo!, or DuckDuckGo
Mozilla Firefox makes it easy to change the default search engine, if you want to switch to Bing, Yahoo!, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia, Twitter or Amazon.com. If the search engine that you want is in this list, then follow the instructions in this section. First, open Mozilla Firefox and click or tap the button in the shape of three lines, that is shown on the top-right corner. This button is named “Open Menu.” In the menu that is displayed, choose Options.
The Options tab is shown. On the left, click or tap Search. Next, look for the “Default Search Engine” section, and click on the drop-down list shown here.
In the list of search engines, select the one that you want to use.
Close the Options tab and you are done. Mozilla Firefox now uses the search engine that you selected instead of Google.
2. Visit the search engine that you want to use and follow its instructions
Some search engines, like Qwant, when you visit them in Mozilla Firefox, show a button for adding it to Firefox. If the search engine that you want to use does this, click on the Add/Install button that is displayed and follow its instructions for adding it as the default search engine in Mozilla Firefox.
The steps involved differ from search engine to search engine.
3. Check Mozilla’s list of available search engines
If the search engine that you want to use is not available in the list shown in the first method of this guide, then go to this webpage on Mozilla’s website. It includes a long list of search engines that can be added to Mozilla Firefox.
Scroll down the list until you find the one that you are looking for and click or tap on its name. A description is shown and an “Add to Firefox” button. Click or tap on it. You are asked to confirm that you want to add the selected search engine to Firefox. Before pressing Add, check the line that says: “Make this the current search engine.”
After you press Add, the search engine is changed from Google to the one you have chosen.
Which search engine do you want to use in Mozilla Firefox?
You have arrived at the end of this tutorial because you are not a big fan of Google and its policies. Or maybe you just want to try another search engine and see if it is better than Google. Before closing this tutorial, share with us what search engine you have switched to, in a comment below. We would very much like to know.
