Tencent, Alibaba and ByteDance Reportedly Place $70 Billion in NVIDIA GPU Orders Despite Major Supply Delays

Chinese technology companies Tencent, Alibaba and ByteDance have reportedly placed approximately $70 billion in orders for NVIDIA RTX PRO 5500 graphics cards, despite expectations that only a small fraction of the requested hardware will arrive in the coming months.

According to a new report, NVIDIA may initially fulfill just 1% of these orders as production capacity struggles to meet demand.

The companies are reportedly willing to accept extended delivery schedules because NVIDIA's software ecosystem and established AI infrastructure remain difficult to replace with domestic alternatives.

The reported orders also highlight China's continued dependence on foreign computing hardware despite significant investments in developing its own semiconductor industry.

NVIDIA's CUDA Ecosystem Remains a Major Advantage

One reason Chinese companies reportedly continue choosing NVIDIA is the widespread adoption of its CUDA software platform.

Over the past decade, many AI frameworks, development tools and inference systems have been optimized for NVIDIA hardware.

Moving these workloads to alternative processors can require considerable engineering work, software changes and additional testing.

Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei and Iluvatar CoreX are developing competing AI accelerators, including Huawei's Ascend processors and Iluvatar's Tiangai 300.

However, domestic manufacturers continue facing production challenges, including limitations associated with advanced semiconductor manufacturing capacity.

For companies operating large AI clusters, established software compatibility and reliable performance across thousands of GPUs can be particularly important.

These considerations may make waiting for NVIDIA hardware more practical than immediately migrating existing workloads.

RTX PRO 5500 Offers 84GB GDDR7 Memory for AI Workloads

The RTX PRO 5500 reportedly features 21,760 CUDA cores and 84GB of GDDR7 memory, making it suitable for memory intensive AI workloads.

Its specifications provide substantial computing resources for running larger models and handling demanding professional applications.

The GPU is also reportedly compatible with existing US export requirements, potentially making procurement less complicated than purchasing restricted AI accelerators.

Chinese companies have reportedly chosen this model partly to avoid licensing difficulties associated with NVIDIA's H200.

Although initial deliveries could remain limited, shipments are expected to increase as manufacturing capacity expands.

The report suggests that cumulative deliveries could potentially reach 700,000 units by the end of 2027.

However, these figures remain projections, and the reported orders and shipment expectations have not been independently confirmed.

For now, the situation illustrates NVIDIA's competitive position in China's AI market, where software compatibility, manufacturing capacity and established infrastructure continue influencing hardware purchasing decisions.
