Football Manager 27 Review: Improved Tactics and Smoother Gameplay Deliver a Strong Comeback

Football Manager 27 marks a significant improvement for Sports Interactive's football management series, addressing several problems that affected its predecessor while introducing a more responsive tactical system.

Following the cancellation of Football Manager 25 and the disappointing reception of Football Manager 26, the latest installment brings improvements to team management, training, match simulation and the interface.

The game launches on November 10, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Early reviews have been positive, with one early review giving the game an 8.5 out of 10 rating for its tactical depth and improved management experience.

However, several features from older entries remain missing, and occasional technical issues continue to affect gameplay.

Football Manager 27 Makes Tactical Decisions More Meaningful

The biggest improvement comes from the new tactical effectiveness system, which expands on the separate attacking and defensive formations introduced in Football Manager 26.

The system considers players' tactical understanding, individual abilities, training preparation and familiarity with the manager's instructions.

As a result, even relatively small tactical adjustments can produce noticeable changes during matches.

For example, switching defenders into wider positions can create additional attacking opportunities, while adjusting winger responsibilities can improve defensive coverage.

Training also plays a greater role in determining how effectively players execute tactical instructions.

Managers can focus on broader team preparation while retaining control over individual development.

These improvements make team management feel more responsive and encourage players to experiment with different approaches.

Football Manager 27 Improves Its Interface and Match Engine

Sports Interactive has also refined the interface introduced during the series' transition to Unity.

Navigation feels smoother than in Football Manager 26, although some menus still require unnecessary steps.

Simulation performance has improved, allowing larger databases and more active leagues without significantly slowing progress between matches.

The match engine also delivers more natural player movement and clearer visual feedback, making tactical weaknesses easier to identify.

Several previously missing features have returned, including cup draws and Transfer Deadline Day.

However, average player position statistics, certain staff attribute displays and season review features remain absent.

Occasional crashes, bugs and questionable player decisions also prevent the experience from feeling completely polished.

Despite these remaining issues, Football Manager 27 represents a meaningful improvement over last year's release.

Its stronger tactical systems, improved training mechanics and smoother simulation make it an appealing option for longtime players, particularly those who continued playing Football Manager 24 rather than upgrading to newer editions.
