TCL Says NXTPAPER Has 15 Eye-Care Certifications but Does Not Name a Single One

TCL's NXTPAPER technology page credits its paper-display line with 117 patents, 15 international certifications and 189 media awards. The footnote under that claim attributes the figures to TCL's own internal statistics, and none of its NXTPAPER tablet pages names a single certifying body.

NXTPAPER is a matte, paper-like treatment applied to ordinary IPS LCD panels, not e-ink. It is sold on a promise of comfortable reading, and the marketing is precise about outcomes and vague about evidence.

What the certification claim actually rests on

The banner above the claim reads "Eye Care Excellence. Certified and Recognized." Directly beneath it, TCL's first footnote says the data is "accurate as of September 2026, based on internal statistics."

Searching the served pages for the usual names returns nothing. TUV Rheinland, SGS and Eyesafe appear zero times on the technology page. They appear zero times again on the pages for the NXTPAPER 14, the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER, the NXTPAPER 11 Plus and the TAB A1 NXTPAPER.

Without a named body there is no way to tell what the 15 certifications cover. A certificate can apply to a panel, to a finished device or only to a display mode, and those are very different claims.

TCL's one substantive display claim is absolute. The technology page says NXTPAPER "filters out harmful blue light and eliminates screen flicker", with no reduction percentage and no flicker figure anywhere beside it.

TCL names one tablet in both halves of the same footnote

TCL markets a dedicated NXTPAPER Key that flips the screen between colour paper and ink paper modes. Its second footnote splits that feature into two different things.

The footnote says the "Physical NXTPAPER Key" is not available on the TAB A1 NXTPAPER, the Note A1 NXTPAPER, the TAB 10 NXTPAPER and the 50 XL NXTPAPER. The next sentence says the "Customizable NXTPAPER Key" is available on the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER, the TAB A1 NXTPAPER and the NXTPAPER 11 Plus only.

The TAB A1 NXTPAPER is named in both lists, in consecutive sentences.

That wording also excludes the NXTPAPER 14 from the customizable key. Its own product page advertises "a dedicated NXTPAPER key".

The spec tables favour the softer reading. On the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER and the TAB A1 NXTPAPER, TCL's Side Keys row lists only power and volume.

TCL's own words for the feature are "customize it to a quick shortcut key of your choice". A button that can be reassigned to anything is a software mode with a shortcut, not a hardware display switch.

Three refresh rates in one line, and the 14-inch is the slowest

TCL rates the NXTPAPER 14 at 60Hz, the TAB A1 NXTPAPER at "90 Hz Max", and both the TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER and the NXTPAPER 11 Plus at 120Hz. The 14.3-inch model is the most expensive of the four and the only one under 90Hz.

Directly below that 60Hz row, TCL lists a touch sampling rate of 120Hz. Those are different measurements, and the 120Hz figure on that page does not describe the display's refresh rate.

Resolution runs from 2112 by 1320 on the 11-inch TAB A1 NXTPAPER to 2400 by 1600 on both the NXTPAPER 14 and the 12.2-inch TAB A1 Plus. TCL's fourth footnote also limits its tougher NDR glass to the two TAB A1 models, leaving the NXTPAPER 14 on plain aluminosilicate.

Amazon matches TCL's prices to the cent

The TCL NXTPAPER 14 sells for $449.99 on Amazon, where TCL Official Store holds the buy box, and TCL's own store charges $449.99. The TAB A1 Plus NXTPAPER is $349.99 in both places.

Neither Amazon listing shows a list price or a savings badge. TCL's store lists no discount on any NXTPAPER tablet it can currently sell.

The NXTPAPER 14 has also become more expensive. The same listing sat at $379.99 on October 19, when it appeared as a comparison alongside a sharp Amazon Fire HD 10 price drop. That puts it $70 higher eleven days later.

What TCL still does not publish

TCL gives no brightness figure for the NXTPAPER 14 or the NXTPAPER 11 Plus, and no contrast ratio, colour gamut or response time for any of the four. It publishes no map of which NXTPAPER generation each tablet uses.

The 11 Plus page names NXTPAPER 4.0. The NXTPAPER 14's page names no generation at all, while its Amazon listing claims NXTPAPER 3.0.

That gap matters more here than on a conventional tablet, because the matte layer is the entire reason to buy one, as TCL's pitch for the pricier Note A1 NXTPAPER makes plain. Neither listing shows a promotion or an end date, and prices can change at any time.
