Spotify has started rolling out new social features that let users see what friends listen to in real time and invite them into shared listening sessions directly from in-app messages.
The update expands Spotify’s Messages feature with Listening Activity, which shows what connected friends currently play inside chat threads. When someone stops listening, Spotify still displays their most recently played track, keeping conversations active around music discovery.
Real-time listening inside Spotify messages
Spotify now surfaces live listening activity within one-on-one chats and the Messages side panel. Users can tap a friend’s activity to play the track instantly, save it to their library, or react with emojis.
Spotify designed the feature as opt-in only. Users control who can see their activity, and visibility stays limited to people already connected through Messages.
Request to Jam makes shared listening faster
The rollout also introduces Request to Jam, a shortcut that lets Premium subscribers invite friends into a Jam session straight from chat. Once the invite is accepted, both listeners can add songs, control playback, and listen in sync.
Free-tier users can join Jam sessions when invited, but only Premium users can start them. During a Jam, Spotify recommends tracks based on the combined listening preferences of everyone in the session.
Mobile-first rollout with age limits
Spotify is rolling out the new social tools on iOS and Android in regions where Messages already exists. The company expects broader availability by early February.
Because the features rely on in-app messaging, Spotify limits access to users aged 16 and older.
Why this update matters
The changes push Spotify further toward real-time social interaction rather than passive music streaming. Users no longer need external apps to see what friends listen to or to start a shared session.
Spotify has steadily invested in social features over the past year as in-app messaging usage continues to grow. With live activity and Jam requests now built into chats, Spotify aims to keep music discovery, conversation, and collaboration inside one app.
