Resident Evil Franchise Could End Within the Next 10 Years, Capcom Producer Reveals

Capcom may bring the ongoing Resident Evil storyline to an end within the next decade, according to executive producer Jun Takeuchi, who says the company has developed a long term plan for the horror franchise.

Takeuchi revealed that Capcom began considering a definitive ending while developing the Resident Evil 2 remake, released in 2019. The planning formed part of a broader strategy to guide the series through multiple releases.

With Resident Evil Requiem arriving earlier in 2026, Takeuchi believes the franchise has completed the first phase of that strategy, potentially leaving another ten years before its planned conclusion.

However, his comments do not necessarily mean Capcom will discontinue Resident Evil entirely. The discussion primarily concerns the direction and eventual resolution of its overarching storyline.

Capcom Has Planned Multiple Resident Evil Games Before the Ending

Takeuchi explained that the original Resident Evil, released in 1996, was developed without a predetermined conclusion for the entire series.

Instead, the story expanded as Capcom introduced additional games, characters and events.

That approach began changing during the development of Resident Evil 2 Remake, when Capcom established a ten year branding strategy and considered how individual releases could contribute to a larger narrative.

Takeuchi also suggested that the order in which the remakes were released contains clues about the company's broader plans.

Although he declined to reveal how many games remain, he confirmed that multiple titles are planned before the storyline reaches its intended ending.

This suggests that the franchise will continue receiving substantial releases rather than concluding immediately after Resident Evil Requiem.

Resident Evil Requiem Has Sold More Than 8.5 Million Copies

The discussion comes as Resident Evil continues to perform strongly commercially.

Resident Evil Requiem has reportedly sold more than 8.5 million copies since launching earlier this year, while cumulative franchise sales have reached approximately 218 million units.

Capcom has also continued revisiting older entries through remakes while developing new stories.

Resident Evil 7 introduced Ethan Winters in 2017, with his story concluding in Resident Evil Village in 2021.

Leon Kennedy subsequently returned to prominence through the Resident Evil 4 remake and Resident Evil Requiem.

Resident Evil Veronica Remake Could Arrive in 2027

Looking ahead, reports suggest Capcom is developing Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica that would revisit Chris and Claire Redfield.

The project is reportedly targeting 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

A story expansion for Resident Evil Requiem is also rumored to be in development, although its release schedule remains unconfirmed.

Neither project has been presented as the final installment.

Takeuchi's comments indicate that Capcom is thinking carefully about how its longstanding narrative will eventually conclude, while leaving room for several additional releases.

For now, the proposed ending remains a long term possibility rather than an announced cancellation of the Resident Evil franchise.
