Cyberpunk 2 Director Reveals Why Vesemir's Death in The Witcher 3 Was Essential to Its Story

Paweł Sasko, associate game director of Cyberpunk 2, has revealed that one of the most memorable moments in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt initially left the game's development team speechless.

Sasko, who previously served as lead quest designer on The Witcher 3, recalled proposing the death of Vesemir during development. The suggestion surprised his colleagues because the character had become an important figure in the lives of Geralt, Ciri and the other witchers.

Despite the initial reaction, the team eventually agreed that Vesemir's death was necessary to give the Battle of Kaer Morhen its intended emotional impact.

Sasko also explained that developing this sequence helped him understand the practical challenges of creating complex quests and memorable story moments.

Vesemir's Death Was Designed to Strengthen Ciri's Story

Vesemir plays an important role throughout The Witcher series as an experienced mentor and father figure to Geralt and his fellow witchers.

His death occurs during the Battle of Kaer Morhen, when the Wild Hunt attacks the stronghold while searching for Ciri.

According to Sasko, the development team initially responded with silence when he suggested killing the character.

However, the decision became important for the narrative because Vesemir's death provides the emotional trigger for Ciri's extraordinary display of power.

The team believed that the scene needed a significant personal loss to make her reaction convincing.

This approach also gave the battle lasting consequences for the characters involved.

Developing the Battle of Kaer Morhen Required Several Revisions

Sasko explained that turning the narrative concept into a playable sequence was particularly challenging.

Early versions included meteors, portals opening in the forest, Wild Hunt soldiers arriving through those openings and a horseback journey back to Kaer Morhen.

However, several ideas encountered technical problems, while others made the quest difficult to follow.

Internal feedback was initially negative, forcing Sasko to repeatedly revise the sequence.

Through those revisions, he gradually learned how individual gameplay elements, narrative events and technical systems needed to work together.

He described the experience as an important stage in his development as a quest designer.

Lessons From The Witcher 3 Continued Into Cyberpunk 2077

Following his work on The Witcher 3, Sasko became lead quest designer for Cyberpunk 2077 and later served as quest director for its Phantom Liberty expansion.

Both projects featured difficult character decisions and storylines with significant consequences.

His experience developing Vesemir's death illustrates how emotional storytelling often depends on careful gameplay design and repeated testing.

Sasko also recalled the collaborative environment during The Witcher 3's development, where designers regularly exchanged ideas and improved one another's work.

He described the process as enjoyable despite the technical challenges and frequent revisions.

Now working as associate game director on Cyberpunk 2, Sasko continues to build on the experience gained from developing some of CD Projekt's most important narrative sequences.

His recollection offers insight into how the Battle of Kaer Morhen evolved and why Vesemir's death became such an important moment in The Witcher 3.
