Discord Will Soon Make Public Server Messages Searchable on Google, but You Can Opt Out

Discord is preparing to make messages posted in discoverable servers searchable through Google, introducing a significant change to how conversations on the platform can be accessed outside the app.

The rollout will begin on November 16, 2026, when eligible servers receive dedicated web pages containing AI generated summaries of their discussions.

A broader change is scheduled for mid December, allowing Google to index message content posted in discoverable channels after the feature becomes active.

However, Discord is providing a privacy setting that allows you to prevent your messages from appearing on these public web pages.

Discord's Google Search Integration Will Affect Discoverable Servers

The upcoming feature applies specifically to discoverable Discord servers, which are publicly accessible communities that do not require an invitation to join.

These servers must have at least 1,000 members to qualify for discoverability.

Discord reportedly has approximately 63,000 discoverable servers, meaning the changes could affect conversations across a substantial number of gaming and community groups.

Private servers and direct messages are not included in the planned search integration.

Discord has also stated that usernames and profile pictures will not accompany the message content exposed through Google.

Importantly, messages posted before the mid December rollout will not be included in the new search indexing system.

Mid DecemberNew messages become eligible for Google indexing
Private serversNot affected
Direct messagesNot affected
Usernames and avatarsExcluded from indexed content
Older messagesNot included in the new indexing rollout

Discord has introduced a setting that allows you to opt out of having your message content displayed on discoverable server web pages.

To disable the feature, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Discord application and select User Settings using the gear icon.
  2. Navigate to the Data and Privacy section.
  3. Find the option labeled "Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages."
  4. Turn the setting off if it is currently enabled.

Disabling this option should prevent your messages from being included in the new public web pages.

The exact wording and availability of the setting may depend on your Discord app version.

Discord Wants Public Conversations to Become Easier to Find

Discord says the change is intended to make useful community discussions available to a wider audience.

Discoverable servers frequently contain gaming guides, troubleshooting advice, recommendations and conversations that could help people searching for information online.

Making selected discussions accessible through search engines could improve how easily that information is discovered.

However, the decision also introduces privacy concerns because messages originally written inside Discord communities may become accessible to people who do not use the platform.

The announcement follows Discord's earlier changes involving age verification, which also generated criticism from parts of its community.

For anyone regularly participating in discoverable servers, checking the new privacy setting before the December rollout is a practical way to control whether future messages appear in public search results.
