Phantom Blade Zero will give players a large arsenal when it launches on October 29 for PC and PlayStation 5, with 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges.
The latest gameplay presentation also revealed more about the game’s combat structure, world design, difficulty modes, and story. One important detail is that weapon choice will matter beyond simple damage values. Some heavily shielded enemies cannot be handled effectively with blades alone, making blunt weapons such as iron fists and hammers important for breaking through tougher defenses.
Soul has 55 weapons to choose from
Combat is built around variety, with different weapons designed to change how Soul approaches encounters.
The Drunken Sword builds up drunken energy and improves evasiveness through an unusual swaying attack style. White Serpent and Crimson Viper work as a pair of twin blades, with the longer weapon able to launch the shorter blade outward for ranged attacks.
The Soft Snake Sword is a flexible weapon that can wrap around an opponent’s guard and even cut through incoming projectiles.
The Tiger Cannon provides a much heavier option, allowing Soul to hit distant enemy groups and trigger explosive targets before they get close.
| Weapon or system | Main function |
|---|---|
| Drunken Sword | Builds drunken energy and improves evasiveness |
| White Serpent and Crimson Viper | Twin blades with ranged attack options |
| Soft Snake Sword | Flexible blade that can bypass guards and cut projectiles |
| Tiger Cannon | Heavy ranged damage against groups |
| Iron fists and hammers | Break heavily shielded enemies |
| Phantom Edges | 25 secondary weapons |
| Primary weapons | 30 available |
| Total arsenal | 55 weapons |
Upgrading weapons can unlock new forms and techniques rather than only increasing numerical stats.
The game will also include a Reforging Talisman. This lets you reset a weapon’s level, recover all invested materials, and move those resources into another weapon. That should reduce the risk of wasting upgrade materials on equipment you later decide not to use.
The world is handcrafted rather than fully open
Phantom Blade Zero is not being described as a traditional open world game.
Instead, the developers say the game is built from eight hand painted Chinese ink wash maps connected into one explorable world.

Each area is individually designed and can include side quests, hidden enemies, rare items, story clues, and optional exploration.
The environments shown so far include a valley controlled by bandits, an abandoned warehouse filled with hanging puppets, a steam powered iron tower, and a large lake crossed using a high speed vessel.
Waypoints allow fast travel between previously discovered locations.
The visual style is being described as kung fu punk, combining traditional Chinese martial arts influences with machinery, body modification, and darker industrial elements.
The story gives Soul only 66 days to survive
Players control Soul, a former feared warrior who is framed for the murder of his leader.
After being betrayed by former allies, Soul is stabbed through the heart during a duel with his childhood blood brother.
He survives only because a mysterious healer known as the Flesh Sculptor revives him.
That revival comes with a strict condition: Soul has only 66 days left to live.
His search for a cure leads into a larger conspiracy involving the Wulin, the martial underworld where much of the story takes place.
The developers also say player choices can change Soul’s path and affect his eventual fate.
Three difficulty modes offer very different experiences
Phantom Blade Zero will include three major difficulty settings.
Wayfarer Mode is designed to be the most accessible option. It focuses on cinematic combat and is intended to make players feel powerful without demanding perfect execution.
Hell Walker Mode is built for players who want more technical combat. Bosses can react to positioning, punish missed attacks, and adapt to player habits instead of relying only on fixed attack patterns.
The most demanding option is 66 Days Mode.
This mode turns Soul’s story countdown into an actual gameplay mechanic. Every death costs time, and reaching zero results in permanent death.
That makes the mode much more punishing than a standard higher difficulty setting.
The large weapon roster, flexible upgrade system, handcrafted world, and distinct difficulty modes suggest Phantom Blade Zero is placing a strong emphasis on combat choice.
With 55 weapons available and some enemies requiring specific weapon types to break their defenses, changing equipment could become an important part of how you approach different encounters.
