Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition appears to be in much better shape on Nintendo Switch 2 than it was in earlier builds, with new footage showing a more stable experience in both docked and handheld play.
FromSoftware originally planned to release the Switch 2 version earlier, but delayed it to August 28, 2026 after concerns about performance and overall quality. Based on the latest gameplay footage, that extra development time appears to have helped.
The improved port may also offer an encouraging sign for The Duskbloods, FromSoftware's upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, since both projects use the studio's proprietary technology.
Docked mode targets a stable 30 FPS
The latest footage shows Elden Ring running at 30 FPS in docked mode.
That is below the 60 FPS target some players may prefer for an action RPG, but stability appears much better than in the older version. The new footage reportedly shows no obvious stuttering during demanding encounters, including boss battles.
| Mode | Current performance impression |
|---|---|
| Docked | Around 30 FPS with improved stability |
| Handheld | Generally solid with some frame rate drops |
| Boss battles in docked mode | Much smoother than earlier build |
| Boss battles in handheld mode | Some drops still visible |
| Release date | August 28, 2026 |
| Platform | Nintendo Switch 2 |
A stable frame rate can be especially important in Elden Ring because combat depends heavily on timing, dodging, blocking, and reading enemy animations.
Although 30 FPS remains a compromise compared with faster versions of the game on more powerful hardware, consistent delivery can still make the experience much more playable than an unstable frame rate.
Handheld mode still has some drops
Portable play also appears improved, although it is not completely free from problems.
The game reportedly performs reasonably well in handheld mode during normal exploration and combat, but some frame rate drops remain visible during heavier boss encounters.
With the launch still several days away at the time of the footage, there is a possibility that final optimization or a release update could improve those areas further.
FromSoftware has not confirmed that all remaining drops will be fixed before launch, so expectations should remain measured.
The important difference is that the Switch 2 version no longer appears to suffer from the same rough presentation seen in earlier demonstrations.
The delay appears to have been worthwhile
FromSoftware's decision to delay Tarnished Edition rather than release the weaker build now looks easier to understand.
The studio has sometimes faced technical criticism despite the strength of its game design. Bloodborne became known for frame pacing issues on PlayStation 4, while Elden Ring itself launched with performance problems across PC and consoles.

Those examples have made technical performance a particular point of interest around FromSoftware releases.
Getting Elden Ring into better condition on Switch 2 therefore matters beyond this individual port.
It demonstrates that the studio has been able to make meaningful improvements on Nintendo's hardware rather than simply accepting the compromises of the first build.
The improvements could benefit The Duskbloods
The biggest wider implication involves The Duskbloods.
FromSoftware's next game is being developed exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, and the studio uses its own internal engine technology.
That means optimization work completed for Elden Ring could potentially carry over into the newer project.
This does not guarantee that The Duskbloods will perform exactly the same way. Different environments, systems, effects, and gameplay mechanics can place very different demands on hardware.
Still, a better optimized Elden Ring port suggests FromSoftware now has a stronger understanding of the Switch 2 platform.
That is encouraging for a game being developed specifically around the system rather than adapted from hardware with different performance targets.
The Duskbloods is expected later in 2026, with a Closed Network Test running through August 24.
For now, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition provides the clearest indication of how much progress FromSoftware has made on Switch 2 optimization.
The port still appears limited to 30 FPS and handheld mode has some remaining drops, but compared with the earlier build, the improvement is substantial.
