Microsoft is bringing the Edge Extended Stable Channel to macOS, giving businesses a more predictable browser update schedule without sacrificing regular security patches.
The new option is scheduled to become available in January 2027. It will allow organizations using Mac computers to receive major browser updates every eight weeks instead of following the standard two week release cycle.
The change comes as Microsoft accelerates Edge development, particularly with the introduction of new artificial intelligence capabilities.
For IT administrators, the longer update schedule could make it easier to test features, maintain compatibility, and manage browser deployments across company devices.
Microsoft Edge Extended Stable Offers an Eight Week Update Cycle
Microsoft Edge Stable currently receives major updates every two weeks, alongside smaller security and maintenance releases.
While frequent updates introduce improvements more quickly, they can create additional work for organizations that need to verify browser compatibility with internal applications.
Extended Stable addresses this problem by delaying major feature releases while continuing to deliver security updates.
This means businesses can maintain a more consistent browser environment without waiting eight weeks for important security fixes.
Unlike experimental versions of Edge, Extended Stable uses the same browser application as the regular Stable Channel.
The primary difference is how frequently major features are introduced.
Microsoft Edge Update Channels Compared
Microsoft currently provides several release channels designed for different testing and deployment requirements.
| Edge channel | Update frequency |
|---|---|
| Canary | Daily |
| Dev | Weekly |
| Beta | Every two weeks |
| Stable | Every two weeks |
| Extended Stable | Every eight weeks |
Microsoft recommends the Stable Channel for general enterprise deployment, while Beta allows administrators to test upcoming changes.
Extended Stable provides an alternative for organizations that prioritize consistency over immediate access to new features.
macOS Support Expected to Arrive in January 2027
The regular Stable and Extended Stable channels are currently aligned at Edge version 156.
Under the upcoming schedule, Stable will continue receiving major updates every two weeks, while Extended Stable will remain on its longer release cycle.

Both channels are expected to align again at version 160 after eight weeks.
During that period, Extended Stable will receive security updates without introducing every major feature released through Stable.
Microsoft currently offers Extended Stable on Windows, with macOS support scheduled for January 2027 according to its development roadmap.
The expansion should give organizations managing both Windows and Mac computers greater flexibility when planning browser updates and validating changes before company-wide deployment.
