HP OfficeJet Pro 8139 Drops to $179.99 at Amazon as Two Cheaper All-in-Ones Cost More Per Page

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8139 is listed at $179.99 at Amazon at the time of writing, down from $279.99, and it is the cheapest of three discounted all-in-ones to actually run. Worked out from HP's own cartridge prices and page yields, a black page on it costs 7.4 cents, against 16.9 cents on the $89.99 Envy 6155 sitting beside it.

The 8139 is a four-cartridge office machine rated at up to 20 pages per minute in black. It has a 225-sheet input tray, a 35-sheet document feeder, fax and a 2.7-inch touchscreen.

That matters because the purchase price is the smallest number in this comparison. Ink is where the money goes.

What the three printers cost today

HP charges $179.99 for the OfficeJet Pro 8139 on its own store, under the label Save $100 instantly. It charges $89.99 for the Envy 6155 as well, so Amazon is matching HP on both rather than undercutting it.

The Canon PIXMA TS6520 is $140.00, with no list price published on the listing. Canon's US online store was serving a maintenance notice when these prices were checked, so there is no maker price to set that $140.00 against.

The HP Envy 6155 is $89.99, the same price this site recorded for it on October 19. It is not a fresh cut, though Amazon is now the seller rather than a storefront.

Cost per page from each maker's own numbers

HP's specification page says the 8139 takes HP 923 cartridges. It rates the black at about 500 pages and each colour at about 400.

HP's store sells that black for $36.99 and each colour for $18.99. Dividing price by yield gives 7.4 cents a black page, and 21.6 cents for a page that uses all four.

The Envy 6155 takes HP 68 cartridges, rated at about 160 pages black and about 120 tri-colour. Both cost $26.99, which works out at 16.9 cents and 22.5 cents a page.

HP's higher-yield EvoMore line does not help on either printer. The 68e black lands at 16.9 cents, the same as the standard one, and the 923e colours come out a fraction of a cent dearer per page than the cartridges they replace.

Canon publishes millilitres, not pages

Canon's own specification sheet for the TS6520 names two cartridges, the pigment PG-295 black and the dye CL-286 colour. It gives their fill volumes as 6.7 ml and 9.9 ml, and no page yield at all.

Canon Canada's specification table for the same printer gives the same two volumes and the same absence. Without a yield, a cost per page cannot be computed from Canon's figures, and estimating one would be guesswork.

Canon does publish yields elsewhere. Its own subscription page cites sets rated at 300 and 400 pages for other PIXMA cartridge families, so the silence here is a choice rather than a house style.

What the ink subscriptions commit you to

Both HP printers ship with an Instant Ink trial, three months on the Envy and a year on the OfficeJet. HP's plans run from $1.99 a month for 10 pages to $32.99 for 700, which is 19.9 cents a page at the bottom and 4.7 cents at the top.

Canon's equivalent is the PIXMA Print Plan, and the TS6520 is on its compatible list. It runs from $4.49 a month for 30 pages to $10.99 for 200, or 14.97 cents down to 5.5 cents a page, with a flat 20 cents on pay per print.

The terms are the part worth reading. Canon says its plan cartridges only work while the subscription is live, and that the printer must stay connected to the internet.

HP's Instant Ink terms say much the same, disabling subscription cartridges on cancellation and while the printer is offline. Neither of these models is an HP+ unit, so neither ties its warranty to Original HP ink for the life of the printer.

Which one is cheapest over 1,000 pages

Run 1,000 black pages through each HP and the order flips. The Envy 6155 costs $258.68 all in, against $253.97 for the OfficeJet Pro 8139 that costs $90 more to buy.

The crossover sits at about 950 black pages, or about 508 if those pages use colour too. HP rates the Envy for 100 to 400 pages a month, so a household at the top of that range passes the line inside three months.

Anyone printing far less may still prefer the cheap one, and adding any of them in Windows 11 is the same short job. The OfficeJet is the only one of the three with a document feeder, which is what turning a stack of paper into a searchable PDF actually needs.

Some gaps remain. HP does not publish what cartridges ship inside the 8139, and Canon does not say how many pages its starter set prints. The same arithmetic on the Envy 6555 on October 20 produced the same uncomfortable answer.

Supply is patchy too. HP's standard black for the Envy 6155 shows as out of stock on HP's own store, which leaves the $53.99 EvoMore black as the only black it sells direct. No end date is given for any of the three discounts, and these prices can change without notice.
