The Dark Mode feature offered by many websites, apps, and even operating systems like Windows, allows you to experience these in darker colors than usual. This can theoretically help reduce eyestrain, as well as increase battery life for your device. Facebook, too, has a Dark Mode, and enabling it is quite easy if you’re using its desktop website or its mobile apps for Android or iPhone. In this guide, I’ll show you how to make Facebook use Dark Mode and how to switch back if you’re not really into it. Without further ado, let’s get started:
The Account button on the Facebook desktop website
In the menu displayed, choose Display & accessibility.
Select Display & accessibility on Facebook's menu
A series of settings are shown: the first one among them is Dark Mode, allowing you to “Adjust the appearance of Facebook to reduce glare and give your eyes a break.” Note that, by default, Dark Mode is turned Off.
The Dark Mode options on the Facebook desktop website
In order to put Facebook on Dark Mode, check the On box. In an instant, Facebook turns dark.
How to turn on Facebook's Dark Mode on the website
How do you turn off Dark Mode on Facebook permanently? Follow the same steps, but instead of selecting On or Automatic, choose Off under Dark Mode in the Display & accessibility settings. As soon as you do that, Dark Mode goes away. Well, at least until you decide you’d like to give it another try. 🙂

There’s also a third alternative option: if you’d like to have Facebook automatically enable Dark Mode, depending on your system settings, select the Automatic option. If you choose that and set your computer to use a dark theme, Facebook’s desktop website will also switch to Dark Mode. If your computer uses a light theme, Facebook will disable Dark Mode too.

There is no longer and option to turn on or off “Dark Mode”
It no longer exists.
Using desktop and spent far too much time.
And why do I care? Because once upon a time, I could write a post in FB, but copy / paste it to a word doc to perfect the language. NOW? The letters are white, background black (and when I print I waste my toner). Another annoyance. No option to change out of dark mode as of:
March 22, 2023
Facebook continually retrieves control of whatever it offered in the past. Again, there is no longer an option to change once you have dark mode enabled. Settings / Accessibility – they no longer care!
the downward arrow says it’s for’search tabs’, cannot find an account button
This is not a solution to my problem. My android tablet and phone are in normal mode on Facebook. Lately when I comment on a video, the comment section is black with white print instead of white with black print. This is very annoying and I want to change it back. I toggled the dark mode button on and off but that didn’t help.
Thank you.
I don’t like Facebook in dark mode and I’m tired of it reverting back to system settings after I’ve turned it off.
This doesn’t work on iPad, it’s a totally different app to the iPhone version, as far as I can tell, it doesn’t have a dark mode!
