8BitDo has previewed a new mobile gaming accessory called the FlipPad, a foldable controller built specifically for smartphones running iOS and Android. The teaser surfaced ahead of CES 2026 and positions the FlipPad as a compact, retro-focused alternative to today’s full-size mobile controllers.
A foldable, portrait-first design
The FlipPad stands out through its flip-up form factor. It attaches directly to the bottom of a phone and folds upward, placing physical controls beneath the display in a portrait orientation. The design recalls classic flip phones and Game Boy-style handhelds rather than console-style grips.
Unlike landscape controllers that stretch around a device, FlipPad keeps the phone upright. That approach targets games designed for vertical play, especially classic and retro-style titles.
Button-focused controls with no analog sticks
8BitDo opted for a minimalist control layout. The FlipPad features a D-pad, ABXY face buttons, Start and Select, and additional customizable buttons. It skips analog thumbsticks entirely, which signals a focus on 2D games, emulators, and simpler mobile titles rather than modern 3D action games.
This choice also allows the controller to stay thin when folded, improving pocketability compared to bulkier clamp-style controllers.
USB-C connection, no battery required
The controller connects through USB-C, drawing power directly from the phone. That removes the need for Bluetooth pairing or an internal battery. The wired connection should also reduce input latency, an important factor for rhythm and retro games.
8BitDo has confirmed compatibility with both Android devices and USB-C iPhones, with official Apple support mentioned in early details.
CES 2026 showcase and release window
8BitDo plans to demo the FlipPad publicly at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The company has not shared pricing or full technical specifications yet, but current information points to a Summer 2026 release window.
More details should surface closer to the event, including supported phone sizes and software customization options.
Why FlipPad matters
FlipPad signals a shift toward purpose-built mobile controllers instead of console-style accessories adapted for phones. By focusing on portability, vertical gaming, and retro-friendly inputs, 8BitDo targets a niche that current mobile controllers largely ignore.
If priced competitively, FlipPad could appeal to players who rely on emulation, classic game collections, or touch-heavy mobile titles that benefit from physical buttons without added bulk.
