Nintendo's newly released remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time reportedly began development after work on Tears of the Kingdom was completed in 2023, suggesting the project took approximately three years to finish.
Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma shared the information in a recent interview alongside fellow producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi, discussing how Nintendo approached remaking one of its most celebrated games.
The remake launched on November 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, coinciding with the franchise's 40th anniversary celebrations.
Aonuma explained that the decision emerged as developers became available following the completion of Tears of the Kingdom, allowing Nintendo to consider projects for the anniversary.
Nintendo Chose Ocarina of Time to Celebrate Zelda's 40th Anniversary
According to Aonuma, discussions about the remake began when Nintendo started considering how to celebrate four decades of The Legend of Zelda.
The team reviewed the franchise's history and identified Ocarina of Time as a particularly important entry.

Originally released for Nintendo 64 in 1998, the game introduced many players to three dimensional Zelda adventures and played an important role in establishing the series' modern identity.
Aonuma also described the original game as his professional starting point with the franchise.
Another motivation was giving younger Nintendo developers an opportunity to reinterpret the adventure for a new generation.
Although Aonuma could not identify the exact date development was approved, he indicated that discussions began after Tears of the Kingdom had finished development.
This places the remake's development period at roughly three years, although Nintendo has not confirmed a precise production timeline.
Ocarina of Time Remake Arrives With Strong Early Reviews
The Nintendo Switch 2 remake has received positive early reviews, including a score of 9.5 out of 10 in one assessment.
The updated release aims to preserve the original adventure while introducing modern graphics, improved presentation and gameplay refinements.
Its arrival also comes ahead of the planned live action Zelda movie, scheduled for 2027.
Nintendo may benefit from the remake's reception as it seeks to encourage additional Switch 2 purchases following weaker quarterly sales.
Meanwhile, early attempts to run the game through PC emulation have reportedly appeared, although performance and compatibility remain limited.
For Nintendo, the remake represents an anniversary project developed with contributions from a younger generation of creators while retaining the foundations of the original game.
