Xbox Premium Upgrades For Halo, Gears And Fable Add Early Access And Extra Content

Xbox has detailed the Premium Upgrade editions for Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E Day, and Fable, giving Game Pass members a way to unlock early access and bonus content without buying the full Premium Edition. The upgrades are designed mainly for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members who already have access to the base games through the subscription.

The key difference is simple. A Premium Edition includes the full game plus extra content, while a Premium Upgrade only includes the extras. If your Game Pass subscription ends, the upgrade does not give you permanent access to the base game. You would need to keep your subscription active or buy the game separately.

The biggest selling point for all three upgrades is early access. Halo: Campaign Evolved can be played early from July 23, Gears of War: E Day from October 1, and Fable from February 18, 2027. Each upgrade also includes cosmetics, digital extras, or other bonus content, with Fable offering the most substantial package because it includes a post launch story expansion.

How the Premium Upgrades work for Game Pass members

Xbox has used Premium Upgrades before, especially for big first party releases that arrive day one on Game Pass. The idea is to let subscribers pay for deluxe edition bonuses without paying full price for the game again.

This model can be useful if you are already subscribed and know you will play the game through Game Pass. It can also be risky if you stop subscribing later, because the upgrade content stays tied to a game you no longer have access to unless you buy it.

GamePremium Upgrade priceMain benefits
Halo: Campaign Evolved$20Early access, skins, artbook, short story, digital manual
Gears of War: E Day$30Early access, weapon pack, seasonal customization packs, premium currency
Fable$39.99Early access, cosmetics, digital artbook and soundtrack, story expansion

Halo: Campaign Evolved has the cheapest upgrade

Halo: Campaign Evolved has the lowest priced Premium Upgrade at $20. It includes up to five days of early access beginning July 23, along with several cosmetic items such as the Classic 2001 Mark V Armor skin, Classic 2001 Assault Rifle skin, Gilded Onyx Armor style, and Gilded Onyx Assault Rifle style.

The Premium Edition Upgrade also includes the Alpha Halo Armory Pack, which features five Master Chief armor skins and six weapon skins. Digital extras include the Art of Halo: Campaign Evolved artbook, the Halo: Hungry Buzzards digital short story, and a digital game manual.

This upgrade is mostly aimed at fans who want to play early and enjoy cosmetic or lore related extras. It does not appear to include major playable content beyond the base campaign.

Gears of War: E Day focuses on early access and customization

Gears of War: E Day has a $30 Premium Upgrade. It includes up to five days of early access, which means players can start on October 1 instead of waiting for the standard launch.

The package also includes the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five Seasonal Customization Packs beginning with the Emergence Pack at launch, and 1,000 Iron, the game’s premium in game currency.

This one may appeal most to players who expect to spend a lot of time in Gears after launch, especially if they care about cosmetics and multiplayer style customization. However, players who only want the campaign may not find as much value beyond early access.

Fable has the most content heavy upgrade

Fable has the most expensive Premium Upgrade at $39.99, but it also includes the most meaningful content. Along with early access from February 18, 2027, the upgrade includes the Premium Edition Content Pack, a digital artbook and soundtrack, and the Fable: Order of the Hero expansion.

The Premium Edition Content Pack adds two cosmetic armor sets called Splendid Armour and Bastard Armour, each with matching footwear, leg, and torso pieces. It also includes three types of in game gifts that can be given to NPCs to influence perception and earn Reputation.

The biggest addition is Order of the Hero, a story driven post launch expansion set in a dangerous new region of Albion. The expansion focuses on a mysterious ancient cult and lets players rise through its ranks while shaping its future through their choices.

The value depends on how much you care about early access

These Premium Upgrades are optional, but they show how Xbox is continuing to build paid extras around Game Pass launches. For some players, early access and cosmetic packs will be enough. For others, the model may feel less appealing because the base game is not included.

Halo’s upgrade is the easiest to justify on price, but it is mostly built around cosmetics and digital extras. Gears offers more customization and premium currency, though its value depends on how much you engage with those systems. Fable looks like the strongest package because it includes a proper expansion, not only cosmetics.

The safest choice is to wait unless you already know you want early access. Game Pass members can still play the standard versions at launch, and only Fable’s expansion currently looks like content that may matter long after the first week.
