Xbox is testing better console personalization and outage alerts for Insiders

Microsoft is testing a new set of Xbox console features that focus on personalization, clearer update information, and easier access to service status alerts. The changes are rolling out first to Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip Ahead rings, which means they are still in preview before a wider public release.

One of the smaller but useful changes is coming to the Xbox Accessories app. When players connect a controller to configure it, the app will now show the exact model on screen. That includes special edition controllers and Elite Series models. This should make it easier to confirm that the right controller is being adjusted before changing button mapping or other settings.

That may sound minor, but it helps people who own more than one Xbox controller. If you have a standard controller, a special edition model, and an Elite controller, seeing the exact hardware name can prevent confusion.

Xbox players will get more control over colors and easier access to update notes

The biggest personalization change is more detailed color customization. Xbox players will soon be able to enter a specific hex color code for the console’s color scheme. This means you can choose a precise color instead of relying only on preset options.

Microsoft is also adding a “match my gamerpic” option. This will let the console pull a color directly from your gamerpic, making the dashboard feel more connected to your profile identity. It is a small quality of life feature, but it fits Microsoft’s recent focus on making Xbox feel more personal.

Another practical change is a new release notes link on the Home menu after console updates. This will let players quickly see what changed, what was fixed, and what new features were added. Xbox Insiders will also see release notes specific to their preview builds, which should make testing clearer.

The outage alert may be the most useful feature for everyday players. When Xbox services have a confirmed issue, a new indicator will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. From there, players can open a status page with details about what is affected and when Microsoft expects services to return to normal.

This should reduce the need to check social media, support pages, or other websites when games, parties, cloud saves, or sign ins are not working properly. If the issue is on Microsoft’s side, the console will make that clearer.

These additions are not major redesigns, but they are sensible improvements. Xbox consoles already receive regular system updates, and Microsoft has been testing other features too, including a new startup sequence and tiered Gamerscore badges. Together, these changes show that the company is still refining the console experience instead of only focusing on games and services.

For now, the new personalization tools, release notes, controller identification, and outage alerts are limited to Xbox Insiders in testing. If feedback is positive, they should eventually reach more Xbox Series X and S players through a future system update.
