2 ways to buy games on Steam using your Amazon Gift Card balance
We’re both fans and users of Steam and Amazon and, at times, we receive an Amazon Gift Card for our birthday or some other reason. Several times we wanted to use our Amazon Gift Card to buy our favorite games on Steam. How do you do that? Luckily, two methods work very well, and we would like to share them with you, in this tutorial:
NOTE: This guide offers guidance for users of Steam, Amazon.com, and Amazon.co.uk. Things should be similar on other Amazon websites, from countries other than the US and the UK.
Method 1: Purchase games on Amazon that use Steam for DRM (Digital Rights Management)
The fastest way to buy Steam games using your Amazon Gift Card balance is to look for games that use Steam for DRM, on Amazon, because you get to purchase and download games instantly. Usually, Steam games have the text “Download Code” or “Online Game Code” in their name. When you find your favorite game on Amazon, before buying it, make sure that you look for the DRM that it is used. These games are sold by Amazon Digital Services LLC, and they can also use DRM systems other than Steam, like Origin, GoG or Uplay.
For example, here’s a screenshot of Fallout 4 - PC [Download Code] on Amazon, which you can immediately purchase on Amazon and then redeem on Steam for download and installation. We highlighted the DRM information so that you know where you find it. If it doesn’t say Steam, then you should look for other purchase options.
Another example of a popular game that you can buy on Amazon and redeem on Steam is Sid Meier’s Civilization VI, which is available in many options, including a PC Online Game Code which can be redeemed using Steam.
Other Amazon websites, like Amazon.co.uk, also add the text “PC Code- Steam” in the name of the games that they sell using Steam’s DRM. For example, on Amazon.co.uk, you have Fallout 4 [PC Code - Steam] or Sid Meier's Civilization VI [PC Code - Steam].
To make sure that you find only games which can be redeemed on Steam, go to the PC Games section on Amazon and check Steam as the DRM system that you want to use. Then, you can view only the Steam games that are available for purchase on Amazon.
After you buy the game that you want, go to your Games and Software Library on Amazon and get the product code for your game. It can be accessed by accessing your Amazon account and going to “Digital Content -> Digital Management -> Games and software.” Below you can see a screenshot of a game we purchased using this method.
Copy the product code offered by Amazon and open Steam on your computer. Click Games followed by “Activate a Product on Steam.”
The Product Activation wizard opens in Steam. Read the information shown about this process and click or tap Next. Then, you are shown the Steam Subscriber Agreement. You must agree to it, to redeem your newly purchased game from Amazon.
Once you do that, you are asked to enter the product code, so that you can add the game to your Steam library. Paste the product code from Amazon’s Games and Software Library and click or tap Next. If everything went well, the game is added to your Steam library, where you can download it and install it when you wish.
PROS: This method is great because it is the fastest way to purchase Steam games using your Amazon Gift Card balance. You can buy and download a game in minutes, and your only limitation is the speed of your internet connection.
CONS: The biggest problem with this method is that you get access to a limited portfolio of Steam games. Usually, just major titles can be found on Amazon, sold with the Steam DRM. Many indie titles are sold only on Steam and cannot be bought on Amazon.
Method 2: Purchase a Steam Gift Card from Amazon
If you want to buy any game from Steam, using your Amazon Gift Card balance, then you must purchase a Steam Gift Card from Amazon. It may be acquired using the following predefined cash values:
- Steam Gift Card - $100 on Amazon.com or Steam Gift Card - $100 by Valve on Amazon.co.uk.
- Steam Gift Card - $50 on Amazon.com or Steam Gift Card - $50 by Valve on Amazon.co.uk.
- Steam Gift Card - $20 on Amazon.com or Steam Gift Card - $20 by Valve on Amazon.co.uk.
Unfortunately, the gift card is a physical product, and you can’t get a product key online, like you do when purchasing games from Amazon. You have to wait for the gift card to be shipped, and get a carton with a unique Steam Wallet Code. If you scratch the area where the code is, you will get to see it.
Then, open Steam on your computer and go to “Games -> Redeem a Steam Wallet Code.”
Enter the code from the physical gift card and click or tap Continue.
The credit from the Steam Gift card is added to your Steam account. If you have never used Steam Wallet credit on your account, you may be prompted to enter your current address to determine the correct currency.
You can now purchase any game on Steam using your Steam Wallet credit. When in the “Review + Purchase” step during checkout click “My Steam Wallet” as a payment method, so that you don’t pay using your credit card or another payment method that you have associated with your account.
PROS: Steam Wallet codes typically do not have any country restrictions and can be redeemed worldwide. Also, you can use your Amazon Gift Card balance to buy ANY game from Steam, which is awesome.
CONS: The biggest problem with this method is that it takes time for the Steam Gift Card to be shipped to your address. You will need to wait for days until it arrives. Also, you have to pay extra for the shipping of the Steam Gift Card.
