Warhorse confirms new Kingdom Come project and open world Middle earth RPG

Warhorse Studios is working on two major RPG projects, including a new Kingdom Come adventure and an open world RPG set in Middle earth. The studio confirmed both projects as parent company Embracer prepares to spin off Fellowship Entertainment into a separate company focused on premium games and major IP.

The Kingdom Come project is likely to draw the most immediate attention from existing Warhorse fans. The studio did not clearly call it Kingdom Come Deliverance 3, so there is still room for a spin off or another kind of follow up. Still, a full third entry would make sense after Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 sold five million copies in its first year and continued to perform better than internal expectations in Embracer’s latest quarter.

The Middle earth RPG could become Warhorse’s biggest test beyond historical role playing

The bigger surprise is the Middle earth RPG. Warhorse is best known for first person historical role playing, with a focus on grounded worlds, detailed systems, and player immersion. Middle earth gives the studio a much larger fantasy setting, and that raises many questions about how closely it will follow the Kingdom Come formula.

The project is described as an open world RPG, but details such as camera perspective, combat style, story structure, playable character, and timeline have not been revealed. The report suggests that a third person approach may be possible because of the wider audience tied to The Lord of the Rings. That is still speculation for now, but it shows how different this game could be from Warhorse’s earlier work.

The timing of the announcement is also important. Embracer is placing Warhorse inside Fellowship Entertainment, a new company built around major franchises and premium game publishing. The planned company will include studios and brands such as 4A Games, Crystal Dynamics, Dambuster Studios, Eidos Montréal, Gunfire Games, Middle earth Enterprises, Warhorse Studios, Tomb Raider, Metro, Dead Island, Remnant, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and Kingdom Come Deliverance.

That makes Warhorse a central part of Embracer’s next phase. Kingdom Come gives Fellowship a proven RPG series with strong sales momentum, while Middle earth gives it one of the most valuable fantasy licenses in entertainment. Pairing that license with a studio known for deep RPG systems could be a strong move if the project is managed carefully.

There is likely a long wait ahead before either game launches. The Middle earth project especially sounds early, and the Kingdom Come announcement still leaves room for interpretation. Even so, Warhorse now has two high profile projects that could define the studio’s future and give Fellowship Entertainment a clear identity around large, story driven RPGs.
