Valve appears to be preparing a reservation queue for the upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame, likely to prevent scalpers from buying up launch stock.
The move follows the messy launch of the new Steam Controller, which sold out quickly and then appeared in the hands of resellers. Valve has already introduced a reservation system for the controller, and code found through Steam Tracker suggests the same approach will be used for the rest of its new hardware lineup.
The Steam update reportedly includes entries for four Steam Machine packages and two Steam Frame packages. That strongly suggests Valve is planning multiple launch options and wants a more controlled buying process.

Two Steam Machine models are already known: a 512GB version and a 2TB version. The other two packages are still unclear. They could be bundles that include the Steam Controller, or Valve may be preparing another storage option, possibly a 1TB model.
A 1TB version would make sense. The 512GB model could fill up quickly because modern PC games are getting much larger. A 1TB option could offer a better middle ground for buyers who want more space but do not want to pay for the 2TB version.
Here is what has been found so far:
| Hardware | Reported package count | Possible meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine | Four packages | Multiple models or bundles |
| Steam Frame | Two packages | Multiple launch options |
| Steam Controller | Reservation system already added | Anti scalper measure |
| Steam Deck | Also listed in the system | Existing hardware support |
The reservation queue should make it harder for scalpers to grab every launch unit. It may not stop resale completely, but it can slow down bots and give regular buyers a better chance.
The biggest unknown is still price. Valve announced the Steam Machine before RAM and SSD prices started rising sharply, and those component costs could affect the final price. That matters because the Steam Machine is expected to compete as a living room PC gaming device, and it needs to feel affordable enough compared with consoles and traditional gaming PCs.
The Steam Machine could become one of Valve’s most important hardware launches since the Steam Deck. If the price is right and the reservation system works, Valve may avoid the frustration that hit the Steam Controller launch.
For now, the code suggests Valve knows demand could be high and is preparing accordingly. The launch may still be difficult, but at least buyers should not have to watch every unit disappear instantly to scalpers.
