Ubisoft is using Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced for a real world treasure hunt, and the prize is not small.
The company has partnered with French startup Unsolved Hunts for Gold & Crystal, a global puzzle hunt tied to the upcoming Black Flag remaster. The winner will receive a buried treasure chest worth $500,000.
The treasure includes a crystal skull and gold coins. The skull is a replica of the in game artifact and was made by French lapidary artisan Hervé Obligi. It is valued at $150,000. The gold coins are minted with the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced logo and are worth $350,000.
| Treasure item | Value |
|---|---|
| Crystal skull with opal | $150,000 |
| Gold coins | $350,000 |
| Total prize | $500,000 |
The hunt will include 15 puzzles, and Ubisoft says they can be solved from anywhere in the world. Players do not need prior knowledge of Assassin’s Creed to take part. The only part that requires travel is the final step, where the winner must go to the Caribbean to dig up the chest.
This will not be a quick competition. The hunt is designed to last two to five years, which means it is closer to a long running alternate reality puzzle than a normal launch promotion.
There is also a cost to enter. Seven participation packs are available, starting at €34.99 and going up to €199.99.
| Pack | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Deckhand | €34.99 | Digital interface |
| Sailor | €49.99 | Physical game materials, maps, bottle, letters, Hunt file |
| Gunner | €59.99 | Adventurer’s Journal |
| Quartermaster | €84.99 | Chaotic Armada pirate strategy game |
| First Mate | €124.99 | Amelia Davies and the Treasure of Blackbeard investigation game |
| Captain | €159.99 | Captain Kenway’s flag and coin replica |
| Pirate Lord | €199.99 | Seal, wax, quill, ink, and calligraphy pack |
Gold & Crystal begins on November 9. That is four months after Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches on July 9.
The timing makes sense. Black Flag is one of the most loved Assassin’s Creed games, and a real treasure hunt fits its pirate theme better than a normal marketing campaign would. Edward Kenway’s story was built around ships, maps, gold, artifacts, and the Caribbean, so Ubisoft is leaning directly into that identity.

Still, the paid entry model may divide people. Some fans will see it as a fun, elaborate collector style experience. Others may feel strange about paying to join a promotional hunt tied to a commercial game.
The long duration could also be a challenge. A treasure hunt that may take up to five years needs strong puzzle design, good support, and enough community momentum to stay alive after launch hype fades.
But as a marketing idea, it is memorable. Ubisoft is not just offering skins, editions, or pre order bonuses. It is putting a real prize in the world and asking players to solve their way toward it.
For Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, that may be the right kind of spectacle. The game is already returning because players remember its sense of adventure. A $500,000 Caribbean treasure hunt gives Ubisoft a way to make that fantasy feel real, at least for the person who eventually finds the chest.
