Creative Assembly is designing Total War: Warhammer 40,000 so newcomers can learn both the strategy series and the Warhammer 40,000 universe without being overwhelmed by its more complex systems.
The studio says the tutorial will introduce mechanics gradually while also giving experienced Total War players a useful overview of the changes made for the new game. The aim is to make the opening hours useful whether you already understand the series or are approaching Total War for the first time.
Lead designer Joy Dey said the development team expects some players to have little knowledge of either Total War or Warhammer 40,000. For that reason, the tutorial will combine gameplay instruction with story and lore.
Space Marines will introduce players to the universe
The tutorial is built around the Space Marines and will use named characters from the Warhammer 40,000 setting.
Rather than assuming players already understand the faction, the game will explain basic questions such as what a Space Marine is and what motivates the characters involved.
Dey described the tutorial as a gateway into understanding Warhammer 40,000 while also teaching the core systems of the game.
| Tutorial area | What players will learn |
|---|---|
| Warhammer 40,000 lore | Space Marines, characters and motivations |
| Basic controls | Core battle interaction and navigation |
| Pause and play system | How to manage battles at different speeds |
| Cover | How units can use the environment defensively |
| Battlefield analysis | How to read threats and opportunities |
| Elevation | How height can provide a tactical advantage |
| New mechanics | Systems introduced or changed for this game |
Creative Assembly acknowledges that battles can become complex, so these systems will be introduced individually rather than presented all at once.
Experienced players will still have reasons to use the tutorial
Battle product owner Dave Petry said several battle systems have either been introduced or changed for Total War: Warhammer 40,000.
That means returning players may still need some guidance even if they are already comfortable with earlier Total War games.

Petry compared the tutorial for experienced players to an appetizer. Someone who already understands both Total War and Warhammer 40,000 can use it to quickly learn the new mechanics while also seeing some additional lore.
For completely new players, the same tutorial is intended to provide a broader introduction to both parts of the game.
Creative Assembly wants to reach a wider audience
The studio sees Total War: Warhammer 40,000 as an opportunity to introduce Warhammer fans to Total War and existing strategy players to the wider 40K setting.
That approach explains why the onboarding process is receiving attention despite the series traditionally being associated with large armies, detailed campaigns and complex battles.
Creative Assembly is also reworking several elements of its traditional formula for the science fiction setting, meaning even long time players cannot assume every familiar system will work exactly as before.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. An exact release date has not yet been announced.
