The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a new expansion called Songs of the Past, giving players another chance to return to Geralt of Rivia more than a decade after the base game first launched. CD Projekt Red announced that the expansion is being co developed with Fools Theory and is planned for release in 2027 on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5.
The announcement confirms earlier reports that CD Projekt Red was preparing new content for The Witcher 3 to help bridge the gap before The Witcher 4. The studio has not shared many story details yet, but the expansion will send players back onto the Path with Geralt. More information is expected later in the summer.
Songs of the Past will also bring higher PC requirements for The Witcher 3
The new expansion will arrive with a technical update for The Witcher 3, and that update will raise the game’s minimum PC requirements. The biggest change is that Windows 11 will become the required operating system. CD Projekt Red says this is tied to Microsoft ending support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, along with the lack of future security updates, official platform support, and ongoing GPU driver support for older setups.
The update will also remove HDD support. CD Projekt Red says SSDs are now required because they offer faster load times, smoother asset streaming, and better overall performance. The game will also move fully to DirectX 12, which the studio says will help support modern hardware and future technical improvements.
| Requirement | New minimum specification |
|---|---|
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5 8400 |
| GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8 GB |
| VRAM | 6 GB |
| RAM | 12 GB |
| Storage | 70 GB SSD |
| OS | 64 bit Windows 11 |
These changes may disappoint some players with older PCs, especially anyone still using Windows 10 or an HDD. However, CD Projekt Red says players will still be able to access an earlier version of the game if they want to keep playing without the new requirements.

The expansion itself remains the main attraction. The Witcher 3 is still widely regarded as one of the strongest open world RPGs ever made, and a new Geralt adventure in 2027 is unusual for a game that originally launched in 2015. Many older games receive patches or remasters, but a major expansion this late in a game’s life is rare.
Songs of the Past also arrives at an important moment for the franchise. The Witcher 4 is expected to move the series forward with Ciri, while this expansion gives CD Projekt Red one more chance to revisit Geralt before that shift becomes the main focus. If handled well, it could work as both a farewell chapter for longtime fans and a warm up for the next era of The Witcher.
