Subnautica 2 sells 2 million copies in 12 hours as early access launch takes off

Subnautica 2 has started early access with huge momentum, selling 2 million copies worldwide within 12 hours of launch. The game also reached major player and streaming numbers across PC, Xbox, Twitch, and YouTube, showing strong demand for the long awaited sequel.

The survival exploration game launched in early access on PC and Xbox Series X and S. Unknown Worlds first confirmed that Subnautica 2 had crossed 1 million sales shortly after release. The number then doubled to 2 million within half a day.

The game also became the top seller on Steam in several countries. Across Steam, Epic Games Store, and Xbox, peak concurrent players passed 651,000. Steam alone accounted for more than 467,000 players, which is far above the original Subnautica’s all time peak.

Streaming interest was also high. Subnautica 2 reached more than 413,000 peak viewers on Twitch and took the No. 1 spot across all categories. YouTube Live added another 109,000 peak viewers and ranked first in gaming.

Early player feedback is also strong. On Steam, Subnautica 2 currently holds a Very Positive rating, with 92 percent of reviews marked positive. Players have praised its Unreal Engine 5 visuals, four player co-op, survival systems, crafting, and story setup.

The sequel moves away from the first game’s planet 4546B and takes place on a new alien world. That gives the game a fresh setting, new creatures, a different ecosystem, and a story built around a failed human colony.

Unknown Worlds has described the sequel’s design as a mix of familiar ideas, improvements, and new systems. Subnautica 2 adds biological progression through Adaptations and Biomods, a redesigned base building system, and a new modular submersible called the Tadpole.

Co-op is one of the biggest changes. For the first time in the series, up to four players can explore together. The game supports crossplay between PC and Xbox, shared progression, and flexible save sharing, so friends can join without needing to repeat earlier progress.

The studio expects early access to last between two and three years. Planned updates include more biomes, creatures, tools, vehicles, and new story content.

Subnautica 2’s launch is notable because it arrived during legal tension between the original studio founders and publisher KRAFTON. That dispute has not stopped the game from drawing a large audience at launch, but its progress may continue to be watched closely as early access moves forward.
