Subnautica 2 is playable on Steam Deck, but the image quality needs work

Subnautica 2 has entered early access, and Steam Deck players can already run it, but the experience comes with clear compromises. The game is playable on Valve’s handheld and can hold around 30 FPS, yet the current visual settings make it feel like a cautious recommendation rather than an easy one.

The game currently defaults to very low settings on Steam Deck. All major graphics options are set to low, while TSR upscaling is pushed to ultra performance. That setup helps the game stay close to 30 FPS, but it also makes the image much blurrier than expected.

The good part is that Subnautica 2 still keeps much of its atmosphere. The underwater environments remain readable, and the lighting and models do not look bad for such low settings. You can still explore, understand your surroundings, and enjoy the alien ocean without the game becoming unplayable.

The main issue is shimmer and blur. Because the game depends heavily on upscaling, shadows can appear sparkly and low resolution. The effect becomes more noticeable while swimming and gets worse at night. It does not completely ruin the experience, but it can be distracting.

There is some room for improvement. The game can still hold 30 FPS in some cases when TSR is raised to quality. It can also run decently with the graphics preset moved to medium while keeping TSR at ultra performance. That suggests the current build has some flexibility, but it is not stable enough yet to call those better settings fully safe.

Battery drain is another concern. Subnautica 2 appears to push the Steam Deck hard during gameplay, which means portable sessions may be shorter than players expect.

The better news is that the game is still in early access, and the developers have already talked about Steam Deck support. A Deck specific preset exists, and more optimization is expected during development. That could improve both performance and image quality over time.

For now, Subnautica 2 on Steam Deck is playable, but not ideal. If you can accept low settings, blur, and some visual noise, you can start exploring today. If you want a cleaner handheld experience, it may be better to wait for future optimization updates.
