Subnautica 2 crosses 1 million sales less than two hours after Early Access launch

Subnautica 2 is already a huge success for Unknown Worlds.

The survival sequel launched into Early Access on May 14, 2026, and passed 1 million copies sold less than two hours after release. Unknown Worlds confirmed the milestone roughly an hour after the game went live.

That fast start is not surprising, but it is still impressive. Subnautica 2 had more than 5 million wishlists before launch, making it one of the most anticipated PC games on Steam.

The player count matched the hype. On Steam alone, Subnautica 2 quickly climbed past 450,000 concurrent players, with a current peak of 467,582 players.

That is a massive start for an Early Access game. Many major full releases never come close to those numbers, and Subnautica 2 reached them almost immediately.

The launch also shows how strong the Subnautica name remains. The first game built a loyal audience through exploration, survival, base building, alien oceans, and a sense of mystery that few games have matched. Subnautica 2 appears to have carried that trust into its sequel.

The success is also notable because Unknown Worlds recently went through a public legal battle with Krafton. That dispute raised questions around the studio, its founders, and a major $250 million bonus tied to Subnautica 2. But the launch numbers suggest the game’s audience was not seriously damaged by that controversy.

Subnautica 2 is still at the beginning of its journey. Unknown Worlds has said the Early Access period could last around two to three years before version 1.0. That means the game will likely change a lot over time through updates, new content, balance changes, and community feedback.

For now, though, the launch sends a clear message. Players were waiting for Subnautica 2, and they showed up immediately.

Selling 1 million copies in under two hours and reaching nearly half a million concurrent Steam players is an extraordinary start. If Unknown Worlds can keep the updates steady and build on the first game’s strengths, Subnautica 2 could become one of the biggest survival games of this generation.
