Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine appears to be moving closer to release, even though the company has still not announced an official launch date. The system was recently added to the Khronos Vulkan conformant product database, a step that often comes late in the preparation process for new hardware.
The listing identifies the system as “AMD Steam Machine” and confirms support for Vulkan 1.4 through an open source AMD GPU driver. The entry was added on May 23 and includes several technical details, including Mesa RADV driver support, a RADV_NAVI33 product family, Linux based software, and an AMD custom CPU listed as 1772.
That does not mean Valve is ready to launch the system immediately. A database listing is not the same as a release date. Still, it is a strong sign that the hardware is being finalized and that Valve is preparing the system for public release.
Valve’s biggest challenge may be price, not hardware readiness
The Steam Machine is being watched closely because it could become Valve’s strongest attempt yet to bring PC gaming deeper into the living room. Unlike the Steam Deck, which is built around portable play, the Steam Machine is expected to compete more directly with traditional home consoles and compact gaming PCs.
Former Xbox executive Mike Ybarra has even described the system as a possible future competitor to PlayStation. That kind of comparison will depend heavily on price, performance, availability, and how easy Valve makes the device for people who want a console style experience without dealing with the usual complexity of PC gaming.

Price may be the most important question. The report notes that the Steam Machine’s internal price may have increased because of current RAM price hikes. If those costs remain high, Valve may have to launch the system at a higher price than originally planned. That could make the device less attractive, especially for players comparing it with PlayStation, Xbox, or the Steam Deck.

Availability is another concern. Hardware launches have often been affected by scalpers, and Valve has already seen similar problems with the Steam Controller, where early stock disappeared quickly. The company is reportedly preparing a queue system for Steam Machine buyers, which could help control demand and reduce resale markups.
For now, the Vulkan database entry gives the clearest sign yet that the Steam Machine is nearing release. Valve still needs to confirm the launch date, price, and full specifications, but the system is no longer just a distant hardware project. It now looks like a product entering the final stretch before launch.
