Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame may be sold in a version without a power supply, according to backend Steam data.
The discovery was shared by Chris Mizo on X, who found references in Steam’s backend to terms such as “BuyWithoutPSU” and “PSULessModel.” That has led to speculation that Valve may offer a cheaper Steam Frame package without a charger included.
That sounds possible at first, but there is a more likely explanation.
Valve already does something similar with the Steam Deck in Europe. Because of regional regulations, the Steam Deck can be purchased without a power supply in some European markets. However, that version does not cost less. It exists as a compliance option, not as a discounted model.
The Steam Frame may follow the same pattern.
| Backend reference | Possible meaning |
|---|---|
| BuyWithoutPSU | Option to buy Steam Frame without power supply |
| PSULessModel | Steam Frame package without included charger |
| Likely reason | Regional compliance, especially in Europe |
| Expected discount | Not guaranteed |
That distinction matters. Some people may hope a PSU less Steam Frame means Valve is preparing a lower cost version for everyone. But based on how the Steam Deck was handled, it may simply be an option required in certain regions where buyers must be allowed to skip the included charger.
It would still be useful for some people. Many players already have enough USB C chargers and power bricks, so buying another one may feel wasteful. But unless Valve changes its approach, the PSU less version may not reduce the final price.

Steam Frame itself is already looking more real. It recently appeared on Qualcomm’s website, which makes sense because the headset is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. That page did not reveal much, but combined with backend Steam references, it suggests Valve is preparing more pieces ahead of launch.
For now, this should be treated as a backend discovery, not a confirmed retail plan. Valve has not officially announced Steam Frame pricing, launch timing, or package options.
The safest reading is simple: Steam Frame may have a version without a power supply, but it may be a regional compliance option rather than a cheaper SKU. If Valve does make it cheaper, that would be welcome. But based on the Steam Deck example, expectations should stay modest.
