Valve has released another Steam Deck beta client update, and this one continues the recent focus on fixing Steam Controller problems. The May 21 update improves controller detection, adjusts trigger haptics, fixes gyro polling stutter, and cleans up layout issues linked to the newer settings changes from the May 13 beta.
The update is aimed at Steam Deck owners who are using the Beta or Preview update channels. You can install it through the Steam Deck’s system settings by switching your update channel away from Stable. Since this is a beta update, it is mainly meant for players who want fixes early and do not mind testing changes before they arrive in the regular stable release.
Valve is still cleaning up Steam Controller behavior after recent beta changes
The most useful fix is for Steam Controller detection while the controller is charging on the puck. Before this update, some players could run into detection delays when Steam started. In some cases, Steam could take much longer than expected to recognize the controller properly. The new beta update fixes detection in that specific situation, which should make the controller feel ready faster after startup.
Another Steam Controller change reverts the trigger haptic effect so it no longer targets rumble motors. That sounds small, but haptics and rumble behavior can strongly affect how a controller feels during play. If the wrong part of the controller is being targeted, feedback can feel strange or less precise.
Valve also fixed an issue that could cause occasional stutter with the gyro polling rate. Gyro controls are important for many Steam Deck and Steam Controller players because they allow finer aiming and camera movement. Any polling stutter can make aiming feel inconsistent, especially in shooters or games where small movements matter.
| Area | What changed in the beta update |
|---|---|
| Steam Input | Steam Controller detection fixed while charging on the puck at Steam startup |
| Trigger haptics | Trigger haptic effect no longer targets rumble motors |
| Settings | Layout improvements and regression fixes added |
| Steam Controller firmware | Occasional gyro polling rate stutter fixed |
| Update channel | Available through Beta or Preview |
The settings section also received layout improvements and regression fixes related to the May 13 client beta. These changes are not as flashy as controller fixes, but they matter because settings menus need to stay readable and predictable on a handheld screen. When Valve changes settings layouts, small regressions can make menus harder to navigate or less clear.
This update follows other recent beta client patches that also focused on Steam Controller issues, including dead zone fixes and other controller related problems. That pattern suggests Valve is actively polishing support again, possibly because more players are using Steam input features across Steam Deck, desktop Steam, and controller based setups.

For Steam Deck owners who use the built in controls only, this update may not feel urgent. But for players using a Steam Controller, especially with the charging puck and gyro controls, it is more meaningful. Better startup detection and smoother gyro behavior can remove small but annoying problems that interrupt regular play.
The safest choice for most players is still the Stable update channel. But if you rely on the Steam Controller and have been running into detection or gyro issues, the Beta or Preview channel may be worth trying. Valve’s recent updates show that Steam Controller support is still being maintained, and this beta continues that cleanup work with practical fixes rather than major new features.
