Star Fox returns on Switch 2 with a new prologue, online battles, and mouse controls

Nintendo has revealed a new Star Fox game for Switch 2, and it is arriving on June 25, 2026.

The game is a new version of Star Fox 64, but Nintendo is treating it as a more cinematic take on the 1997 classic. It includes fully voiced dialogue, a new orchestral soundtrack, redesigned characters, fresh cutscenes, and expanded story scenes between missions.

One of the biggest additions is a new prologue focused on James McCloud, Fox’s father. This opening mission takes place before the main campaign and sets up the story before Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team enter the fight.

The main campaign keeps the branching route structure that helped make Star Fox 64 memorable. Your path can change based on completed objectives, defeated enemies, and choices made during missions. The game also includes three difficulty settings, with Expert unlocked after earning all medals.

Nintendo is also adding a new online Battle Mode. This mode pits Team Star Fox against Team Star Wolf in 4v4 matches across three stages. Each stage has a different objective, including zone control on Corneria, crystal collection on Fichina, and cargo retrieval in Sector Y.

Here is a quick look at the confirmed modes:

ModeWhat it offers
Campaign ModeMain story with branching routes and three difficulty settings
Challenge ModeCleared stages return with new objectives on Normal or Expert
Battle Mode4v4 online matches between Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf

The game also uses several Switch 2 features. Joy Con 2 mouse controls let you aim and steer by holding the controller like a mouse in Campaign and Challenge modes. Co op split controls let two players share one Joy Con 2, with one handling piloting and the other handling shooting.

GameShare support will let up to four people play locally or online through GameChat, even if some players do not own the game. Nintendo is also adding character avatars with AR facial tracking, so your mouth, blinks, and eyebrow movement can appear through Star Fox characters during GameChat.

For longtime fans, Nintendo 64 controller support is included too. That should help players who want the game to feel closer to the original control style.

This new Star Fox is not just a cleaner version of the old game. Nintendo is adding story material, multiplayer, modern presentation, and Switch 2 specific controls while keeping the core route based structure of Star Fox 64. For a series that has been quiet for years, this looks like a serious attempt to bring Star Fox back into Nintendo’s current lineup.
