Star Citizen passes $1 billion in crowdfunding while version 1.0 still waits for a release date

Star Citizen has crossed a major and unusual milestone, with more than $1 billion raised through crowdfunding after nearly 14 years. The figure makes Cloud Imperium Games’ space sim one of the most heavily funded game projects ever, but the milestone also arrives with a familiar question still unanswered: when will version 1.0 actually launch?

The project began in 2012, when Chris Roberts launched a Kickstarter campaign for an ambitious space game inspired by the spirit of Wing Commander and Freelancer. The campaign raised more than $2.1 million from nearly 35,000 backers, which was already a strong start. Cloud Imperium then kept funding open through the official Star Citizen website, allowing players to keep buying access, ships, and other in game items over the years.

That long term model has now pushed the total past $1 billion. According to the report, more than 6.5 million people have contributed to the project, with an average contribution of about $153 per person. Funding grew slowly at first, then increased sharply after the pandemic. The project crossed $900 million only a few months ago before reaching this new milestone.

Star Citizen keeps growing, but its long development cycle remains the central issue

Star Citizen has often faced criticism because of how long it has remained in development. In its early years, some critics called it vaporware, while others questioned whether the full game would ever arrive. Cloud Imperium has continued to push back against that image by releasing updates and expanding the playable alpha, but version 1.0 still has no confirmed launch date.

The latest major update, Alpha 4.8, arrived earlier this month with an economy and persistence reset, along with new gameplay content. One of the main additions is Tactical Strike Group, a six phase squad assault mission set around a fortified asteroid base in the Nyx system. The mission includes ship combat, trench run style attacks, defensive objectives, and an FPS boarding section.

Alpha 4.8 also expands refueling into a proper gameplay loop. Players can now use refueling contracts, beacons for stranded pilots, and dedicated operator systems for refuel ships. The process has also been changed with new fuel pods, nozzles, interface improvements, and automatic fuel flow after a purchase is confirmed.

The bigger question remains the final release plan. Chris Roberts previously suggested that Star Citizen version 1.0 could arrive in 2027 or 2028. Squadron 42, the separate single player campaign with a major Hollywood cast, is currently aimed at 2026. However, Roberts recently said that target is not fully guaranteed, partly because the team wants to avoid a difficult launch window near Grand Theft Auto 6.

Star Citizen’s $1 billion total shows that its community remains unusually committed. It also increases pressure on Cloud Imperium to show that the long wait can lead to a finished game. For now, Star Citizen is still growing, still playable, and still without a firm date for its full release.
