Sony raises PlayStation Plus Essential prices for new signups

Sony is increasing the price of PlayStation Plus Essential in select regions, with the new rates taking effect for new customers starting May 20, 2026. The change affects one month and three month subscription options, while most current subscribers will not see an immediate increase unless they change their subscription.

The monthly PlayStation Plus Essential plan is rising from $9.99 to $10.99 in the US. The three month plan is increasing from $24.99 to $27.99. In Europe and the UK, the new prices will start at €9.99 and £7.99 for one month, and €27.99 and £21.99 for three months.

Sony says the change is due to ongoing market conditions. The company also notes that current subscribers outside Turkey, India, and some other select regions will not be affected unless they modify their existing plan.

1 month$9.99$10.99
3 months$24.99$27.99

The increase is small compared with some recent gaming price hikes, but the timing is sensitive. Console prices have already gone up across parts of the industry, and players have become more frustrated with rising costs for hardware, games, and subscriptions.

The announcement also comes shortly after reports that Sony may stop bringing its big single player PlayStation games to PC. That makes the wider picture more frustrating for some players: PlayStation may become more expensive while also becoming more closed around major first party games.

PlayStation Plus Essential remains the entry level tier. It gives players online multiplayer access, monthly games, cloud saves, and discounts. Even after the increase, it remains close to Xbox Game Pass Essential pricing, though the two services are not identical in what they offer.

PlayStation Plus Essential$10.99
Xbox Game Pass EssentialAround $9.99

The price rise does not affect every subscriber at once, which softens the immediate impact. However, new customers will pay more right away, and existing subscribers may eventually feel the change if they renew differently, switch plans, or live in regions where the new pricing applies.

This is another sign that subscription gaming is getting more expensive. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are still cheaper than buying several games separately, but they are no longer feeling like the low cost deals they once were.

For players, the best move is to check your current renewal status and plan length. If your subscription is active and unchanged, you may not need to do anything right now. If you were planning to join PlayStation Plus Essential soon, the new price will matter from May 20.
