S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is getting a substantial free 2.0 update on August 20, 2026, the same day its first DLC expansion arrives. The update is designed to refresh the base game for both returning and existing players, with changes that affect exploration, combat, stealth and world simulation.

One of the biggest areas of focus is A Life, the system that controls NPC and creature behavior across the Zone.

The 2.0 update expands the number of actions and locations available to NPCs and monsters. Stalkers will have more places to rest, including campfires and bus stops, while the world will feature more contested areas where mutants and human groups can clash. NPCs can also loot dead characters even when you are not present to watch it happen.

Custom Rules gives you more control over difficulty

Update 2.0 also introduces a Custom Rules difficulty mode.

This will allow you to adjust multiple gameplay settings and create a challenge level that better matches how you want to play.

The update also adds three types of binoculars that can be used to scout enemy positions before entering dangerous areas.

Several new weapons will be hidden throughout the Zone. These include the Arev assault rifle, GP3A designated marksman rifle, SKP designated marksman rifle and Fora 230 submachine gun. Each weapon will also have a unique variant to discover.

Fog adds new stealth possibilities

A new Fog mechanic will affect both sight and hearing.

Because enemies will also have reduced awareness in foggy conditions, the system could create more opportunities for stealth and alternative approaches during encounters.

A PDA is being added to help track progress, while new monsters will expand the range of threats players can face.

The Zone Kit modding tools are also being updated with additional narrative scripting, audio and localization features, giving mod creators more options when building custom content.

Visuals and lighting are also being updated

The Back to the Zone update includes changes to environmental graphics and lighting.

The aim is to improve the overall presentation while maintaining the bleak and post apocalyptic visual identity of the Zone.

Update 2.0 arrives alongside the first S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 DLC expansion on August 20.

The base game is available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC, while the free update will add a large amount of new content without requiring players to purchase the expansion.
