One aspect that frustrates me about robot vacuum cleaners is their demanding maintenance routines, especially those with mopping capabilities that need constant attention. Sure, you can solve this problem by investing in a model with a self-cleaning docking station, but prepare for your wallet to feel significantly lighter. A prime example is Roborock's Qrevo Curv series, which offers numerous innovative features, a quirky design, and exceptional suction power, for a price to match. Luckily, the company has recognized that not everyone wants to pay premium prices and introduced a more accessible option: the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X. This model trims away what some might consider luxury extras - no pet tracking cameras or built-in voice assistants - but keeps the core cleaning technology intact. This sounds good in theory, but what about the practice? Does the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X deliver a great user experience, with satisfying cleaning performance? Read this review to find out:

Verdict

During my testing of the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X, I’ve come to appreciate the numerous features this robot vacuum offers. Its suction power, efficient navigation system, and excellent corner cleaning abilities make it a standout performer on hard floors, while the multifunctional dock reduces maintenance headaches by automatically emptying the dustbin, washing the mops with hot water, and drying them to prevent mold. The Roborock app deserves praise for its extensive customization options that allow you to fine-tune every aspect of cleaning and mopping. However, this robot isn’t without a few drawbacks: it struggles with carpets and cables, sometimes requiring multiple passes on carpets or in areas with a lot of dirt, as well as manual rescue when confronted with cables. Another minor drawback is the limited number of included accessories, which means you'll have to purchase replacement dust bags and other items within a few months of use. In conclusion, the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X is a solid option for homeowners with primarily hard flooring who want to minimize their cleaning efforts without splurging on the absolute top-tier models. While it may not be the perfect solution for heavily carpeted homes, it strikes a good balance between functionality and cleaning efficiency, while avoiding the pricing of top-tier models.

Unboxing the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X

All the Roborock Qrevo Curv vacuum cleaners come in a large and heavy cardboard box. It measures 50.1 x 55.8 x 50.8 cm (19.8 x 22 x 20 inches) and weighs 21 kg (46.3 lbs). That’s quite a lot, so it’s a good idea to get some help when carrying the box into your home and unboxing it. One of the things I like most about the packaging is that it does a good job of communicating the features of the robot that you bought. There’s plenty of visual information, including large text and pictures, giving you a good idea on what to expect.

The Roborock Qrevo Curve series has several models that are included, which share a common design and set of features. However, there are also differences in their suction power, chassis, and navigation system. The most advanced model in the series is the Roborock Qrevo Curv (Model V10VIV), while one of the most affordable models is the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X, which is the one I’m reviewing.

The packaging for all robot vacuums in the Qrevo Curv series is almost identical, and you don’t see the exact model printed in large, bold letters. If you want to double-check that you got the model that you paid for, look on the sides of the packaging. On the left, you should see a sticker similar to the one pictured below, which displays the exact product name, as well as the model: RRE0VIC (the model code for the vacuum itself) + EWFD26HRR (the model code for the dock).

Inside the box, you will find the multifunctional dock, packaged in a protective bag, two mopping pads, the user manual, the quick start guide, and other leaflets. You’ll also find another cardboard box, protecting the actual robot vacuum.

When you unbox everything, you get all these items: the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X vacuum and its docking station, a second disposable dust bag (the first is found inside the docking station), the power cord for the docking station, the quick start guide, the user manual, and the safety documentation. In some markets, like the USA, Roborock also bundles an additional main brush. Unfortunately, in countries like Romania (where I’m based), this additional brush is not found in the default packaging.

When unboxing the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X, you should pay attention to the packaging’s size and weight. It’s best that you don’t do this alone. However, the experience is quite pleasant, and the amount of information you get is useful. The only downside is that you get little in terms of additional accessories. Personally, I would have loved to get more disposable dust bags and the additional main brush in all markets, not just some.

Design and hardware specifications

The design of the Roborock Qrevo Curv series reminds me of the Stormtroopers from Star Wars. It’s clean, shiny, with rounded corners, and discrete branding on the top side of the multifunctional dock.

When you open the dock, you find two water tanks (one for clean water with a capacity of 4 liters, and another for dirty water, with a capacity of 3 liters). Beneath the plastic cover with the “Designed by Roborock” inscription, you also find a removable dust bag. The dock not only charges the robot vacuum, but it also cleans it, washes the mop pads, supplies the robot vacuum with hot water for mopping, and dries the mop pads when cleaning is over. The water for mopping can be heated up to 75℃ or 167℉. A cool feature of the multifunctional dock is that it dries the mops and the dock base with warm air, preventing the growth of mold and unpleasant odors.

Even though the dock has all these useful cleaning features, the dock base may still gather some dirt. Therefore, in order to make cleaning easier, the dock base is removable, so you can wash it and wipe it whenever you need.

The robot itself weighs 3.99 kg or 8.8 lbs, while the dock has 9.89 kg or 21.8 lbs (without any dirt or water inside). The robot vacuum is round, measuring 352 x 352 x 98 mm (13.86 x 13.86 x 3.86 inches), while the dock is a cube with rounded corners, measuring 450 x 450 x 450 mm (17.72 x 17.72 x 17.72 inches).

The Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X has a case made of glossy white plastic. On the top side, there’s a plastic bumper with the Roborock logo on it, which protects the LiDAR sensor. You also have two buttons: one for docking the robot, and another for starting a cleaning session. Both buttons can also be pressed and held, and they perform different actions, depending on whether the robot is docked or not. Therefore, it’s a good idea to read the user manual to learn what they do.

When you remove the magnetic top cover, you get access to the dustbin, which you can remove and empty manually. However, this is not required, as the dock does the emptying automatically at the end of each cleaning run. If you look carefully at the front of the robot, you notice the obstacle avoidance sensor, which allows it to navigate your home carefully.

If you turn the Qrevo Curv S5X upside down, you see the two mop cloths, the wheels, the main brushes and their cover, the side brush, and the omnidirectional front wheel. There are also cliff sensors and a carpet sensor. The mop modules rotated automatically, and also lift themselves up to 10 mm (0.39 inches). Their maximum spinning speed is 200 RPM, and they adjust their water flow on a scale of 30 levels. When detecting corners, the side brush and the right-side mop can extend automatically to clean and mop along the edges.

While the more expensive models in the Roborock Qrevo Curv series boast a suction power of 18500 Pascals, the Qrevo Curv S5X has 17000 Pascals. Unfortunately, this information isn’t clearly communicated on some regional Roborock websites. Only the USA website does this. According to the manufacturer, this robot’s maximum suction power allows it to remove 99.5% of the hair that’s stuck on carpets.

The battery on the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X has a 5200 mAh capacity, while the one on the more expensive models in the series goes up to 6000 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the fast charging technology on this model has been improved to be 30% faster than on older models, like the Roborock S7.

Just like its brothers in the series, the Qrevo Curv S5X can automatically lift its omnidirectional wheel and main wheel to cross thresholds of up to 2cm. In comparison, the more expensive Roborock Qrevo Curv can navigate over obstacles that are 3 cm high.

These are the most important features and technical specifications of this product. While it's one of the less pricey models in the Roborock Qrevo Curv series, the S5X has excellent characteristics that make it a strong contender on the market for premium robot vacuums. I’m very curious to see it work and how efficient it is in cleaning my apartment. Until then, if you want to read an extensive presentation from its manufacturer, go to its official web page: Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X.

Setting up the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X

If you want to use the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X, you must install the Roborock app, which is available for free for both Android and iOS. To use the app, you have to create an account or sign in with an existing one, and then add your device. The process is made simpler if you choose to scan a QR code found on the product’s packaging.

The quick setup wizard isn’t complicated, and it helps you connect the robot to your Wi-Fi. Once the robot is connected to the network and the internet, you see some instructions on preparing your space for cleaning and setting the options you want for specific features like Do Not Disturb Mode, which aims to lower the noise and dim the lights on the robot vacuum and its docking station.

You also get to choose what voice and language you want to use. This Roborock product can be used in twenty-three languages, starting with English and Chinese, and ending with less-used languages like Romanian or Polish. You also get to create a quick map for your space, which is mandatory if you want to create cleaning schedules and control where you want the Qrevo Curv S5X to clean and where you don’t want it to go.

One of the first things you should do is enable automatic firmware updates, to benefit from the latest bug fixes and performance improvements. Keep in mind that during the update process, the robot vacuum cannot be used. Luckily, the process doesn’t take very long, so this limitation shouldn’t be bothersome.

After the map is created, you should spend a bit of time customizing it. Rotate the map so that it’s easier to understand, name your rooms, set up no-go zones, etc.

One of the aspects I loved most about my experience with the Qrevo Curv S5X is the Roborock app. It offers everything you need, from detailed settings for the multifunctional dock to controls for how the robot vacuum operates. I recommend starting with daily cleaning runs while experimenting with the many available settings. Since the default settings may not suit everyone, after some trial and error, you can find a configuration that works best for your specific space.

The app provides real-time status updates for both the dock and the vacuum. You can adjust various settings, including the mop wash frequency, the washing mode used for mopping, the water temperature, and how often the dustbin is emptied.

Then, you should access the settings for the robot vacuum. You can configure it to vacuum and mop simultaneously, vacuum only, mop only, or use a combination of both, with different settings for each room.

If you have a lot of dirt to clean, and you need the vacuum to use its maximum sucking power, you have to set it to vacuum only, and manually turn on the MAX+ suction power profile. This one isn’t available when setting it to Vac & Mop. You should also set the number of cleaning counts you want during a cleaning run and the route the vacuum should follow.

You can also set routines and schedules so that the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X cleans your space as often and in the manner you need. As I mentioned earlier, there are numerous features and options available, so take your time to explore them all and establish your ideal routines and settings.

While the top-of-the-line Qrevo Curv has a built-in assistant that you can talk to, the Qrevo Curv S5X lacks this feature. However, it compensates by offering integration with popular voice assistants, such as Google Assistant/Gemini and Alexa. It can also be easily integrated into your smart home ecosystem with Google Home.

Installing and setting up the Qrevo Curv S5X is quite a pleasant experience. The Roborock app is well-designed, easy to use, and gives you options for many features and settings. If you’re a geek like me, there’s a ton of stuff you can experiment with to find the best settings and routines for cleaning up your living or working space. Next, let’s see how well this robot performs in cleaning tasks.

Cleaning and mopping with the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X

I’ve run several cleaning cycles with the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X, and one of the features I appreciate the most is its ability to maneuver around obstacles. It handles shoes left around the house, slippers, and towels thrown on the floor very well. It’s also effective at navigating between chairs and tables, and it’s great at avoiding curtains that may get stuck into it, causing chaos.

However, dealing with cables can be problematic. For instance, the Qrevo Curv S5X often gets stuck on electric extension cords under my desk and tends to snag USB-C charging cables that are lying around. I’ve learned that if you have cables on the floor, you should turn off the FlexiArm Design Extended Cleaning for Crevices feature in the AI Laboratory section of the Roborock app. Enabling this feature increases the likelihood of the robot catching and tangling cables, which can cause it to become stuck.

The Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X excels at cleaning floors, mopping them, and navigating obstacles up to 2 cm high. It’s especially competent when dealing with corners, due to the FlexiArm Arc side brush and the extendable right-side mop. It can also get under your furniture, if it has a space of 9.79 cm or 3.85 inches.

This robot vacuum also excels at cleaning up hair, and its DuoDivide main brush guides the hair towards the central dustbin inlet, preventing it from tangling and clogging.

Look, no hair

Look, no hair

Unfortunately, the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X struggles when dealing with carpets. If you have a large, low-pile rug (up to 2 cm thick), the robot can navigate it. However, it doesn’t clean it as thoroughly, despite having great suction power, so you may need to set it to perform two cleaning runs instead of just one. When dealing with small, lightweight carpets or bath mats, the Qrevo Curv S5X is likely to get stuck and will often require your assistance to get it unstuck.

If you have areas with a lot of dirt, the Smart cleaning pattern may not be the best option, as it can leave some dirt behind. To achieve improved cleaning efficiency, you can either program the robot to make two cleaning runs instead of just one or change the cleaning pattern to Mixed and set its suction power to MAX+. Alternatively, you can request an additional spot cleaning to ensure that all the dirt is collected and nothing remains behind.

Roborock boasts that this robot vacuum delivers quiet cleaning. They say that the Qrevo Curv S5X generates only 55 dB of noise when mopping with a low water flow. I’ve done my own measurements using a specialized app, and I can confirm this to be true. However, most people will want this robot to vacuum, not just mop, and the noise levels rise when vacuuming but don’t get too upsetting. For the most part, the Qrevo Curv S5X is relatively quiet and doesn’t bother you with its noise. Only when you set it to vacuum using the MAX+ suction power does it reach 71 dB, which is typical for any vacuum cleaner. In the table below, I have summarized the noise generated by the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X, depending on its mode of operation. As you can see, it gets noisier when it returns to the dock and empties the dustbin. Luckily, this process is quick, lasting less than a minute for each cleaning run.

Overall, the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X is a powerful and competent vacuum cleaner with useful mopping features. However, it does best when used in spaces without rugs, carpets, or a lot of cables lying on the floor.

Accessories and maintenance

The maintenance aspects of the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X are super comfortable. You only need to refill the water tank occasionally. The same with emptying the dirty water tank. The dust bag is also easy to replace, without getting yourself dirty. Everything is done quickly and easily.

According to Roborock, the dust bag is designed to last up to seven weeks of cleaning. Therefore, the two bags included with the Qrevo Curv S5X should be sufficient for three to four months of use, depending on your usage habits and the amount of dirt the vacuum cleans. That’s not too much time, so you have to buy spare dust bags relatively quickly after installing the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X. Luckily, you can find spare ones on Amazon. At the time of writing, a pack of 18 dust bags costs a little less than 20$. I was also able to easily find replacement parts, such as brushes, filters, and mop pads, for similarly affordable prices.

If you’re unsure when to purchase the next filter or main brush, simply check the Maintenance section in the Roborock app. It shows you how long each item is estimated to last until it needs replacement. You should also get notifications when a specific part needs to be replaced.

The maintenance of the Roborock Qrevo Curv S5X is a pleasant experience. The Roborock app displays the remaining lifespan of each item, and accessories can be easily found online, at reasonable prices.
