Valve has released a new Proton 11 beta update, but Steam Deck users should not expect much from this one.
Proton 11 Beta 3 is a small update focused only on ARM64 devices. The main change is an update to FEX 2605, which includes performance improvements, JIT fixes, and other under the hood work.
That means the update is not really aimed at the current Steam Deck, which uses an x86 AMD processor. Instead, it matters more for ARM based devices, including Valve’s upcoming Steam Frame.
FEX is important because it helps run x86 software on ARM hardware. Since the Steam Frame is expected to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, improvements to FEX could help make more PC games playable on that device through Proton.
| Proton 11 Beta 3 | Details |
|---|---|
| Main change | Updated FEX to 2605 |
| Target platform | ARM64 |
| Steam Deck benefit | Minimal |
| Steam Frame relevance | More important |
| Update type | Small compatibility layer update |

For Steam Deck owners, this is mostly a maintenance update. You can still download Proton 11 by searching for it on your Steam Deck, but this specific beta does not bring major Deck focused game fixes.
For Steam Frame, though, this is another sign that Valve is preparing its software stack for ARM gaming. If Valve wants the Frame to run a large Steam library, FEX improvements will be a key part of making that possible.
So while Proton 11 Beta 3 is small, it points toward something bigger. Valve is not only maintaining Proton for the Steam Deck. It is also preparing for the next wave of Steam hardware.
