Playground Games has shifted more attention to Fable after the launch of Forza Horizon 6, with the studio opening several roles to help finish development on the RPG. The studio said excitement is high after Forza Horizon 6, but it is still recruiting across multiple disciplines as Fable moves toward its planned release later this year.
The hiring push includes roles in engineering, design, community, cinematics, and production. Playground is looking for talent such as a principal gameplay engineer, senior UI engineer, senior producer, senior game designer, media lead, and experienced cinematic artist.
Fable is still planned for autumn, despite earlier internal delay reports
The job posts matter because Fable has been in development for a long time, and fans have been watching closely for signs of progress. There had been reports that the game may have been internally delayed and could move closer to December to avoid Grand Theft Auto 6. However, Playground later reaffirmed that the RPG is still planned for fall.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Developer | Playground Games |
| Game | Fable |
| Current release window | Autumn |

Playground is also getting help from other Xbox studios. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty recently said Blizzard’s cinematics team is helping on Fable. He used that as an example of how Microsoft’s studios can share expertise without forcing every team to work the same way.
That kind of support could be useful for Fable because the game is aiming for high production values. A January deep dive showed more of the RPG’s direction, including high fidelity visuals, a new approach to morality, and a combat system built around posture. The combat appears to reward players for knocking enemies off balance, while still allowing a mix of melee, ranged attacks, and magic.
The morality system is also changing. Older Fable games were known for more direct good and evil choices, but Playground’s version is taking a more nuanced approach. Studio founder Ralph Fulton has said the new game will use a more shades of grey style, with the protagonist gaining a reputation based on actions in the world.

That could make the game feel more modern while still keeping the spirit of Fable. The series has always mixed fantasy, humor, choice, and player identity, but newer RPG audiences may expect characters and consequences that feel less binary.
The hiring announcement does not mean Fable is in trouble by itself. Late stage development often needs more producers, engineers, designers, cinematic staff, and support roles to polish systems, finish content, and prepare for launch. But it does show that Playground is still actively staffing up as it tries to complete one of Xbox’s biggest upcoming RPGs.
Fable is currently planned for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S in autumn. After years of waiting, the next major test will be whether Playground can deliver a full gameplay showcase and a firm date that matches that window.
