Outward 2 enters Steam Early Access in July 2026 with a tougher survival RPG vision

Outward 2 will launch in Steam Early Access on July 7, 2026, for Windows PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. A closed beta is scheduled to begin on May 26, 2026. The game will be PC exclusive during Early Access, with console versions planned after the full 1.0 release.

Nine Dots Studio is keeping the core idea that made the first Outward stand out. You are not a chosen hero or an unstoppable fantasy warrior. You are a normal person trying to survive in a hostile world, where planning, hunger, injuries, weather, and bad decisions can matter as much as combat skill.

Nine Dots is expanding the RPG systems without making Outward 2 a traditional power fantasy

Outward 2 takes place around 50 years after the first game and covers four regions of Aurai. The sequel adds a full seasonal cycle, a fixed in game calendar, and weather events such as blizzards and thunderstorms that can affect gameplay. There is still no fast travel or GPS style guidance, so you need to read the map and use landmarks to navigate.

Character creation is also much deeper this time. You can choose from three starting scenarios, including a miner, a homeless person, or a bureaucrat. There are also 11 backgrounds that affect stats, starting gear, and dialogue options, which should make repeat playthroughs more meaningful.

Combat is being reworked with improved animations, weapon specific movesets, and animation blending. That means you can transition more smoothly between attacks, blocks, and dodges, but stamina still limits reckless play. The studio wants combat to feel more fair than the first game while keeping the sense that you are vulnerable.

The game also avoids traditional RPG leveling. Instead of experience points, Outward 2 uses an Exercise system built around small achievements tied to what you naturally do, such as combat, crafting, and survival. These exercises improve stats, unlock passive bonuses, and help open breakthrough points for trainer skill trees. You can only choose three breakthroughs out of eight, so builds are meant to involve real commitment.

Defeat also works differently. There are no standard deaths or simple save reloads. Losing a fight can trigger a scenario where time passes, gear is stolen, status effects are added, or you are rescued in a way that changes the situation. Outward 2 adds wounds as well, so a sprained ankle can stop you from sprinting or dodging until treated with the right supplies.

Early Access will not include the full game at launch. Nine Dots plans to have three of the four regions ready, along with the opening parts of each faction questline. Voice acting will also be limited at first because the studio wants player feedback on the script before recording every dialogue line. The full Early Access period is expected to last around 12 to 18 months if development goes as planned.

Outward 2 is not trying to become easier or more mainstream. Nine Dots is improving the systems around navigation, combat, co op, and progression, but the studio is still building a slow, demanding RPG where preparation matters. For players who liked the first game’s harsh survival focus, that may be the main appeal.
