Obsidian is going back to its 2019 RPG The Outer Worlds and giving it a second life. The studio has confirmed that new updates, improvements, and even a free upgrade are on the way for all players.
Everyone gets upgraded to the better version
The biggest change is simple:
- Owners of the original game will be upgraded to the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free
- This version includes both expansions:
- Peril on Gorgon
- Murder on Eridanos
The upgrade will roll out on May 27 across:
- Xbox Series X|S
- PlayStation 5
- PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG)
The original version will stay in your library, but it will be removed from storefronts.
Fixing a remaster that didn’t land well
The Spacer’s Choice Edition originally had a rough reception due to:
- Performance problems
- Bugs and technical issues
Now Obsidian is stepping in to improve it directly, rather than leaving it as-is.
Updates are already rolling out—and more are coming
The first update is already live and focuses on:
- Bug fixes
- Performance improvements
But a second, larger update is also planned, which will include:
- More performance optimizations
- Lighting improvements
- Quest and gameplay fixes
- A brand-new feature: grenades
There’s no release date yet for this bigger update.
Even last-gen players benefit
If you’re on older consoles:
- Xbox One and PS4 owners with the base game + DLC will also get upgraded
That means the improvements are not limited to current-gen systems.
This isn’t unusual for Obsidian
Obsidian has a pattern of revisiting older games.
For example:
- Pillars of Eternity received a turn-based mode years after launch
This approach suggests the studio is willing to refine older titles instead of moving on completely.
The takeaway: a rare win for players
Free upgrades like this are not common—especially years after release.
What players get:
- A better version of the game
- Included expansions
- Ongoing fixes and improvements
- New gameplay additions
For fans of The Outer Worlds, this is an easy upgrade. For new players, it may be the best time yet to jump in—especially if the upcoming updates successfully fix the issues that held the remaster back.
